About Me (In My Own Words)
I had a bicuspid aortic valve repair done March22, 2010 by Dr. Bavaria at UPenn. It has served me well for the last 12 years although there was some minor deterioration being noticed in the last 2-3 years (physiologically with TTE). Then I had a bacteremia this past summer (2021) with no vegetative lesions were observed according to two TEE's a month apart. I was going 110% after the PICC line was removed (had been on vancomycin for 6 weeks). Then just before Christmas, I had severe pain in my chest at night. Thought it might be a heart attack but the ambulance folks said my ECG was ok as were other markers, so I didn't go to the hospital. Made an appointment with my local cardiologist and they did another TEE which showed deterioration of the valve leaflets and more severe aortic valve regurgitation. Upon viewing the CT from back in July, Dr. Bavaria thinks he sees a small, chronic abscess from the bacteremia as well as really messed up leaflet/valve anatomy and some aortic root enlargement. So it's time for another open heart surgery, next Monday on Valentines Day (my pick of 2 open days they could fit me in). In 2010, I was also a member on this website (different email address) and learned some great things and also got Adam's book. My dad had had open heart surgery in 1975 and other cardiac procedures, so I figured I was following in his footsteps to some degree. This time around, being the 2nd time of getting my chest opened up, I am a bit more hesitant, although I am grateful Dr. Bavaria will be doing the surgery again.
I'd like to hear other's experiences of having a 2nd open heart surgery and their thoughts beforehand. Thanks.
