About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with both mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation and aortic valve prolapse with regurgitation four years ago. My cardiologist thought that I would need definitive surgical intervention after about two years, but I did not develop any symptoms until a month ago (May 2023). I actually had a visit to the emergency room with a few combined symptoms at once -- that led to my referral to the Structural Heart Team at UMC Banner in Tucson. I will meet with an evidently renowned & respected cardiothoracic surgeon for my first consultation next week (6/13/23). I am quite anxious, of course. I have a lot of questions and the list is growing! One of the things I learned from reading The Patient's Guide to Heart Valve Surgery by Adam Pick is that I should interview at least a few surgeons who are qualified to perform the intervention procedure(s) that appeal to me. If I am a candidate for minimally invasive procedures using robotic assisted surgery, that is for me!!! I have a referral for a second opinion pending approval with my insurance. Maybe I will travel to Scottsdale, Arizona for treatment after all. We shall see. Meanwhile, it is safe to say that I am very anxious, even quite nervous. At the same time, I am happy to be here -- and I wish everyone a quick and full recovery as you start your fresh, new start on life's journey!
