Joan Napier Hoping that all goes smoothly, Anthony. I had a cardiac cath one month ago so I understand how you're feeling. Prayers that everything proceeds uneventfully. (the anticipation is the worst part- the procedure is not so bad!)

I'm scheduled to have heart valve replacement surgery this month. What's the average length of time on these types of surgeries? Also, I'm leaning toward the mechanical valve. Is there anyone out there who chose the mechanical valve and what's it like taking blood thinner medication every day?

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Anthony! The person you should write to is: Anthony Copeland-Parker who just finished running a Marathon in Berlin with his "Mechanical Valve" and in my opinion is the go-to man for information on this subject. Check out his Journal and guestbook plus his amazing story and you won't be disappointed! Good luck to you! Terrie

Linda Crawford OK so I'm a fumble fingers :). As I was saying -- I've taken Coumedin for the last 47 years. There was a brief break when I was pregnant. It is really not so bad--you do have to have your blood checked about once a month (little finger stick). You have to keep your diet about the same in regard to how much of what kinds of foods you eat -- no spinach binges 😛. I've had numerous bumps and spills including the kind that requires stitches with no problems.

Joan Napier I have chosen a tissue valve because my surgeon does not think I'm a good candidate for lifelong blood thinners. At age 56, I realize I will need another 1-2 more valve surgeries which is a bit unsettling. But I will follow my doctor's advice. Each person's situation is different, so it's good you're researching and getting input from others. Good luck with your decision. Joan
Anyone out there that chose a mechanical valve? If so, what's your quality of life like now? What adjustments in every day life are required?
