I had my surgery Wednesday, July 14, 2021. After a slight hiccup requiring that I be rushed back into OR to stop some bleeding, I am doing great. I came home Saturday with no need for pain meds. My valve was too small for a bio valve, so the doctor had to use the mechanical. As a result, I am now on Warfarin, and I need some help figuring out the best diet for managing over assumption of vitamin K. Also is anyone using a home monitor than enables them to perform INR tests at home? I welcome any feedback from those of you who have figured out management of mechanical valves. Thank you!

Lisa Coombe You don’t really need to change to much, just don’t eat to much green leafy vegetables, some are high in vitamin K which can affect your INR, I have a home test monitor and find it a great help but every so often I will get a blood test done just to compare the results

Darlene Clark Thank you Ana and Lisa! I believe the home monitor would be very helpful. I am putting together a list of fruits and veggies that I normally eat with vit K values in order to help me manage. I tend to eat broccoli often which is one of the high ones. They have told me, though, that the key is to be consistent without binge days.
Lisa Coombe You can still eat broccoli but have a small portion and you should be fine

Lisa Coombe I had broccoli with my dinner tonight, yum yum
Susan Lynn Yay!!! You did it!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery! ❤
Does anyone have recommendations for best foods to eat....or not eat the day before surgery?

William Gentile I was told that I could really eat anything but to limit myself to one smallish drink. We had a nice Italian dinner (pasta + chicken) and a glass of wine. Surgery went well and no one ever asked me about my 'last meal'.

Deena Z I asked over and over again, because I am prone to nausea from anesthesia. I was told not to drink any alcohol prior to surgery, so Wiliam faired better than me there:) I did have a full sternum, cut, which meant my surgery was longer than minimally invasive. Either way, I ate a big meal and a french dessert, before surgery. Since you have little to no appetite after surgery, I was glad to have some food in me!

Phyllis Petersen I, too, went for a nice Italian meal the night before. I didn't have a glass of wine and the nurse in pre-op asked me why not. Apparently, I should have asked and enjoyed a nice glass to help me relax.

Darlene Clark Thanks to all of you! I was planning on having a really good meal the day before. Then I started reading about all the foods that might create problems for surgical outcome. Found myself thinking I might be looking at a day of chicken broth and water! SMILE! I really appreciate your feedback.
