I haven't checked in here for a very long time. My mitral valve repair was September 2022. Recovery was quite long and arduous. I have been on metoprolol and bisoprolol to lower heart rate. But it also lowered my blood pressure too much and I am currently not on anything. But one again my heart rate is often in the 90's-120's and BP is still all over the place too, 93/79, 122/76, 91/76, 79/64 even 85/71! Sometimes my heart rate shows 48 and 49. My left atrium has remained stretched out a bit from the severe regurgitation and there is some residual thickening of the heart muscle. My question for everyone post mitral valve repair, is anyone else experiencing low blood pressure and high heart rate. if so how is your cardiologist treating it? Saw my lung specialist today and his dad had mitral valve repair and has the same issues so wondering if it is a common problem? I get dizzy, have bouts of double vision, get short of breath at times, Thanks for any input you an give me.

Yumiko Ishida Before my surgery I was taking a combination of midodrine (raises BP), propranolol (lowers BP but not as much as metoprolol), and digoxin (does not affect BP). That helped control the runaway heart rate I had from persistent afib. After surgery I was on metoprolol but they quickly took me off of it because of my low BP. They even restricted my pain med dose because of the BP. I kept complaining about my heart rate, but they said 100-110 is high normal, and they discharged me without any meds to control my HR. At the follow up with my cardiologist I asked if I can go back on my pre-surgery routine, and they said yes to midodrine and propranolol but not digoxin. Propranolol alone is not doing it, though. I’m only 20 days post surgery, so I’m sure it needs more tweaking. That being said, I think you should look for an electrophysiologist, Diana. It does sound like you might be having afib (enlarged atrium, HR and BP all over the place, etc). My cardiologist led me down a long cumbersome path when it came to dealing with my afib, and I wish I saw my electrophysiologist sooner. I try not to dwell on it, but it could have spared me some unnecessary procedures and months of discomfort.

Diana Melnyk @Marie Myers, @Yumiko Ishida, @Rose Madura Thank you for your responses. I just wore a holter monitor for 48 hours but haven't seen the cardiologist yet for the results. I wear an Apple watch which gives me readings all day long. Never says I am in Afib, but always Sinus rhythm, except at times when I use the ECG and 3-4 times in a row says Poor Recording. I think at those times it may be not able to get a reading because or electrical issues. I did have a lot of PVC's in the first year following surgeries but the cardiologist says I am having fewer now.

Richard Munson You will get a million different responses to your questions. I don’t say answers because we all heal at our own rate. I imagine age, previous to surgery health and many other factors including the surgeon that performed the surgery, contribute to how fast we regain our strength. If i read you correctly, you had surgery last september. 6 months is not a long time to reach 100%. I had minimally invasive in january of 2021. Am i 100%? Maybe not. Maybe close. In my view after joining adams site after my surgery and reading about full zippers, minimally invasive and robotic i still think the less invasive anything is better. I have had 5 knee surgeries in my life. 2 zippers and 3 arthroscopic. I can say they all hurt but the recovery from the less invasive arthroscopic was far better. Yes, there is pain. More or less or a different kind, who knows.

Marie Myers I am not convinced dizziness and double vision is normal. Are you sure you might not be experiencing “auras”, (sparking lights, jagged lines) that are often common after open heart surgery? I had dozens of them in the weeks after surgery, and they gradually decreased with time. I remember you also had low BP, which can cause dizziness. What does your PCP or cardiologist say?

Diana Melnyk @Marie Myers and @Ana Brusso I am not having auras just double vision from time to time along with dizziness. I had my eyes checked as advised by my cardiologist and was told los BP will cause double vision because the eyes are not getting enough blood to them. As for continued low BP my PCG and Cardiologist told me to up my salt intake and drink more water.🤷🏼♀️No one seems concerned. The 12mg a day of metropolol seem to be keeping my heart rate below 100 now but that is also keeping BP low. Thanks everyone for your kind concern and comments.

7 months post op now. Went back on Metropolol 12.5mg 2X daily after being on no meds for several months. Heart rate up to 159 at one point. Couldn’t get a hold of my cardiologist and GP was no help. Finally called my surgeon and he was very upset I had been taken off all meds and my heart rate was high. He put me back on my current dose. Most recent ECG showed valve repair is 100%. Heart rate is in mid 70’s now but BP is still 80’s over 60’s . Too low! I get dizzy, blacked out a few weeks ago when I got out of bed, and have episodes of double vision. Scary when driving. Dr. Blew me off and told me to get my eyes checked. Optometrist said low BP causes double vision because not enough blood getting to the eyes. Curious if others have had any of these issues this far out and if so what has helped? By the way, there is a FaceBook page for this group Heart Valve Surgery Support Group.

Susan Lynn Diana - The doctor could have replaced the valve if he thought the calcification was significant enough to warrant it. If you trusted him enough to do your surgery, maybe you need to trust him enough to make the assessment on the valve. I suspect all of us have some level of calcification that comes with age - our surgeons likely don't tell us about it unless it's a problem. A second opinion can't hurt, so by all means, don't hesitate if it will ease your mind. Please keep us posted.

Hi from Alberta Canada! Our socialized health care is in shambles and hospitals and cardiologists are overwhelmed. Therefore it has been difficult to get any answers or to be seen. I would appreciate your input or thoughts from your own experiences. I am now 4 months post op mitral valve repair, minimally invasive through right side of breast, not minimal pain though. My biggest concern is my heart rate. My BP was quite low and has risen somewhat to 90’s over 60’s but sometimes all over the place. Sometimes with just sitting quietly it will be 100/80 then 90/68. My heart rate is usually over 100. Walking through the mall today it was 128, just walking leisurely. Last week when I was standing at the stove cooking meet it spiked to 158-59 for 2 minutes. It seems to jump up when I’m sitting quietly at the computer or watching tv. Resting heart rate is average 81-91 for January. Walking heart rate average 103-128. Sleeping rate is always 78-99. My GP looked up from checkups pre-surgery to see what my heart rates were the past couple years and it ranged between 60-80. I’m concerned my heart is working too hard. I am 135 pounds, 5’6” age 68. I am not on any meds. Doctors took me off heart meds cuz my BP went dangerously low. Thanks for reading this long post and sharing any thoughts, experiences or insights.

Klara Čičić Dear Diana, I am 4 months post mitral valve repair also, BP is just like yours, but puls is in the 80s (when I am still) , 90s (under stress and light activities), and 100s in exercion (for example on a bike it will go up to 110, not more). I am on beta blocker bisoprolol 2,5mg though! It lowers heart rate. Why doesn't your PCP do an ECG if he has an ECG machine? If he doesn't, maybe change to another one who does and is maybe more knowledgeable, if it is possible? First it's important to do ECG to see the basic rythm (are you in AFib or some other kind of arrythmia) and rate etc. Ideal first test in your case would be 24h-48h ECG monitoring to see what exactly is going on. In Croatia we have similar health care system, but one can always go privately without waiting (ofcourse if you have the money🙁) or if it is emergency one goes to the ER and gets ECG for sure, and the basic anwsers, and maybe even faster referal. To tell you what is going on and what you should do based on your post is impossible and could be dangerous. And this episode by the stove could easily have been AFib, which shouldn't be lightly taken. I hope you find anwsers soon! Please take care ❤️ keep us posted!

Diana Melnyk Thanks everyone! I do have a cardiologist @Greg Lewis in Red Deer Dr. Searles at Healthy Heart Institute. He never sees me, does phone appointment. First one back in October he was on call, was interrupted every 3-5 minutes, had to ask if I’d had an echocardiogram which I’d had 10 days before and was the purpose of his call!🙄 The next call in November was 2 hours late at 4:30 and he was getting in his car to go somewhere. December 22 was last one and I read him a few weeks worth of BP and heart rate stats and his response was “Well maybe that’s just where you’re going to be. Right now it is 3:30am and I am writing this from the ER at Foothills. The surgeon got back to me yesterday and was not happy that my heart rate was high and I had been taken off all meds and told me to come and get a “work up” and get checked and get meds so here I am. I got here about 4:00pm, saw someone around 7:30, took blood, checked D-dimer levels which were up, so had to do CT for clots as precaution but no clots found, now I’m in different part of ER on a monitor and BP cuff waiting to see cardiologist. I just kept getting shuffled around in RD.

He got the same readings on an EKG, gave me some medication and sent me back home. I get an alert from my watch when I’m in afib. I can always tell before it alerts me. I trusted it, but I got about the same response that you did. He said that it’s not reliable. I’ve been getting alerts that my HR is below 50 for over 10 minutes after I’ve been up doing things and then sit down. It actually shows it’s at 41. I don’t know whether I should mention this or not. I’m about halfway afraid not to mention it since my normal HR stays in the upper 90s. I’m kind of just watching what’s going on. I still rely on my watch a lot because I get the same readings on my BP cuff.

It went up and now I’m clinically diagnosed with high blood pressure. I hope things settle down for you. I liked the part that you’re feeling great. Best wishes in your continued recovery.

J H Mattingly Diana...glad you are doing great!!! It took me a few months before my BP/HR started to normalize and has been fine ever since. I think it just takes a bit of time to get back to our new normal.

I am 9 weeks post mitral valve repair. My BP is all over the place but mostly low as in 80-90's over mid 60's. Heart rate is consistently 100 or higher and the last two times I took my BP readings yesterday it indicated that I had an irregular heart beat. I am having headaches pretty much 24/7, have dizzy spells and my vision has gone double a few times and takes a few minutes to normalize. The good news is my mitral valve repair looks good on the echo but I didn't have these issues prior to surgery. My cardiologist seems frustrated and took me off all meds and said he was more worried about my low BP than high heart rate. He is so overworked that the one phone appointment I had last week he had to put me on hold at least 4 times and then when he came back on he didn't know where we left off and had to ask if I had had an echocardiogram since we last met (which was only once). When I told him yes last week he ha to go check. I don't feel like I have anyone to get answers from. Thoughts please.

Kenneth Southard I had low blood pressure for about 8 weeks after surgery, then it came back to where it is normally. My heart rate was also high for about the same amount of time. I think that is all part of the recovery process. I never had dizziness or double vision, but depending on how low your BP is, these may be from hypotension. I would not worry too much about irregular heartbeat indications from your BP machine as I think I would want something more long term and accurate like being under a Holter monitor for a few days.

Kevin Stevenson My first Post here! I am 5 months past Mitral valve repair and I went through similar things. Low BP and high heart rate, some dizziness when standing up quickly. Lasted about 3 months. Doctor also took me off beta blockers and in a while everything settled down. Good Luck
Diana Melnyk Thank you for your comments! It’s hard to know what is normal. Nice to hear other’s experiences!

Klara Čičić Dear Diana, this seems so frustrating. I am 8 weeks from mitral valve repair, also had double vision a few short times, my BP is 90/60 and puls is steadily in 80-90s. But, I would go to my PCP for advice if I were you, (or maybe to another cardiologist for a second opinion). These symptoms could be indicative of atrial fibrillation, which should be taken seriously as it changes approach to medication. I hope it is nothing to worry in the end, but symptoms like this should be checked. 24h holter ECG reading should be the first step to see which exactly heart rhythm it is... Good luck

Kenneth Southard Smart watches are pretty good at detecting AFIB with a pretty high degree of accuracy. The couple of times after surgery that I went into it, my watch was able to detect it. I've also found that a pulse oximeter will jump around all over the place as far as heart rate with wild ranges when I was in AFIB.

Janelle Hurst Diana - I also experienced low BP (top number in the 80's) and heart rate over 100 for quite a few months after surgery. I'm now almost 10 months post-op and BP runs lower than before surgery but not as bad as initially and heart rate is in 80's. I had migraines every day for a week after the surgery, but have heard from others that had headaches for quite some time after...I have learned how much of a toll this surgery takes on one's body, but that with time (and a lot of patience) things will improve.

Diana Melnyk Thank you so much to those who commented. My cardiologist just wants me to keep monitoring my BP and heart rate until January or February when he will then do another Echocardiogram. He hopes by then my heart will be back to normal. I have no clue what normal is for me! He said if heart rate goes to 126 and stays there for a day or two then call immediately but if it’ just up and down not to worry.

Claudia Kwalbrun I am 5 weeks post op from mitral valve repair and I am having the same issues….having an Apple Watch is very helpful in monitoring your heart rhythm. I also am extremely tired and have some lung complications….never thought the recovery would be so difficult since I also had minimally mitral valve repair.

Diana Melnyk @Claudia Kwalbrun I was surprised at how hard recovery has been and how much pain was involved! The term MInimally Invasive was deceiving! I am now 10 weeks post op and feeling great! My only concern is still Blood Pressure and heart rate. My BP was very low for so long and now my Systolic is over 100 and Diastolic is over 80 which is not normal for me! And heart rate is staying around 100 with upticks anywhere from 108 to 136 but doesn't stay elevated. i believe you will start to feel better soon. Did you have a sternotomy or minimally invasive?
