It's not a long distance but I'm taking the scenic route. It's been just shy of 2 weeks since my cardiologist confirmed that surgery is now imminent and ten days since the referral to Mayo Rochester was made but I've had no contact from Mayo to get the ball rolling. I operate in a fast moving world and expected things to unfold more quickly than this. Being me, I created a nice timeline of how this was going to go and so far we are very behind schedule. I am scheduled for a Coronary Angiogram on Friday locally so I am clinging to that little bit of progress (and it doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun). I've tried to get information on what kind of timeline and expectation is reasonable but pinning that down has been elusive, days for some and months for others. Admittedly, a great deal of my angst is that I have support between Memorial Day and August 1, but I don't know where it will come from after that so I am eager to take full advantage of that timeframe. Plus, my teenage son's schedule is much easier to manage in the summer than fall. My cardiologist's office has confirmed a second request on their part and suggested that I call Mayo directly, which I will do tomorrow. I'm not sure how this is supposed to go and would appreciate any thoughts on timing that can better align my expectations with reality. It doesn't help that I've had a second bomb dropped in my lap, that quite frankly feels like a bigger deal than heart surgery, and it looks like the two situations are going to unfold concurrently. I'm not sure how that is even possible. I can't focus on work or much of anything else and I keep finding myself pacing through the house like a caged animal. I would really like it if they could just come to my house and sedate me, do what needs to be done and wake me up when it's all over and I'm back to 100%. That seems reasonable.

Cathleen Weed You will know MUCH more after Friday. Once they get a good look at your valve function from the angiogram you will be given a timeline and possibly the green light on surgery. I know it's frustrating.

Shannon Gray You are not alone....I was a wreck while we went through consults and planning. I have two young children and going through this robbed me of precious time and memories. Do some visualization....write down one thing each day that may encourage the ball to get moving a bit faster ( phone calls, etc.)? And then allow your mind to refocus on your regular everyday events. Don't let it overtake your every thought...easier said then done, I know, but before you know it, it will al evolve and be done in the time meant to be? Thinking of you!

Enrique K Once you are diagnosed with a valve disorder let the course take its pace. After the angiogram you will have a much better idea and then you and your cardiologist can plan accordingly. Just have patience with yourself.

Rose Madura I'm sure that every place is different, but from the time I saw the cardiologist and surgery was recommended, everything happened in 10 day time frames it seemed. The cardiologist visit was April 11, angiogram April 25, visit to surgeon May 8 and surgery planned May 25 so I guess that's not too bad. I doubt that the surgeon will see you until the angiogram is ok so that's probably the hold up. I know it's hard but keep positive thoughts. You'll get through it. Some things are just not in our control.
Vanessa Corwin I feel your pain. Hang in there, take it one step at a time.
Mary Rodriguez they called! Surgery scheduled for July 17th.

Robert McElrath Glen, I know that waiting for the call is torture, but I hope you take encouragement knowing that you're having surgery at Mayo. Heart surgery is all about the surgeon and you chose well. You're going to have a great outcome. I'm 9 weeks AVR post-op, and my observation is that doctor-to-doctor communication about my case was state-of-the-art and impressive while patient scheduling seemed stone-aged by comparison. But, the surgery was great.

Glen Miller I appreciate all the encouraging and calming words. I am much better today. Busy work day and dealing with the other non-heart related issue helped to keep my mind occupied. Congrats to Mary Rodriguez on your surgery date and thanks to Robert McElrath for the stone-aged patient scheduling comment. Very helpful. Brian Jensen, I have been referred to Drs. Schaaf and Dearani at Mayo. I haven't met either yet but my cardiologist worked and trained with them at Mayo prior to coming to Kansas City.
