To all awaiting open heart valve replacements, I can't stress enough the potential absence of acute pain! Surgery is performed in such a manner as to minimize post- surgical discomfort. Once the many tubes are removed, you're on the road to recovery. Good luck to all about to go under the treatment .

Rita Savelis I didn't have any sternum pain at all ( the anasthesiologist had described it this way as well). I had LOTS of discomfort and exhaustion, but pain was not a word I would use to describe this surgery, not from drains, not from the sternum cut. Often those patients who do suffer from pain have it because of the position their bodies are put in during surgery, so it is muscular pain. Also for women, minimal surgeries that go through breast tissue on the side can be more painful.
There is a lot that is not fun about post surgery, but physical pain is often not one of them.

Thought I'd pass on my recent experience with open heart surgery. On Jan 20th, I had both mitral and Aortic Valves replaced with bovine valves. In addition, the Maze procedure was done and a hole in interseptal wall repaired. And would you believe ,not one drop of post surgical pain !! I am now at home , sleeping in my own bed and again feasting on home cooked food ! In house therapy is gradually getting strength back into my body. Surgery was performed by Dr. jonathan Somers at HighlandPark Hospital in Highland Park,Il. I must add a very important comment to my experience. Adam Pick's book, "A guide to heart Valve Surgery " is a "must read!" It will remove any doubts , unknowns and fears from beginning to end of the entire process. I can't stress enough reading the book as it also will give one peace of mind !! I'm on my way to a better life with a strong 86 yr. old heart !!!
Gina Fiorentino Herb, thank you for your most inspiring post! I am so happy to hear you are doing so well!!!

Adam, I've followed your site for a few years now,and read your book. I'm a retired DDS, 85 yrs. old who will now experience all of the info. you have given us. I will be going in for open heart surgery to repair the mitral valve, replace the aortic valve with a boine type, and do away with A-fib on Nov.20. I'm well aware of the entire procedure and have no apprehensions, partly thanks to you.I want to keep in touch with you throughout the entire experience and hope to hear from you. Thanks. Nancy James Hi Herb - you made a comment on my question about antibiotics before a dentist appointment. Do you only take them that day before the appointment with the dentist? I had an implant a couple of years ago and I was on something but for a week. I just never heard about taking them just the day of - did you take anything afterwards? Thanks.
