Not sure about shortness of breath... I would personally check in with surgeon/nurse about that.
I believe you should be walking often but not doing anything intensive. If you had your sternum cut open you should be following sternal precautions, so you wouldn't want to be doing repetitive activities with your arms. So, no sweeping and so forth. No lifting weights greater than 5 lbs per arm for a while.
If you weren't given instructions on discharge about how much activity you should be doing I would ask your doctors office for more information and guidance on that, as well as, the shortness of breath.
