I'm 22 weeks post surgery (AVR) today and my body feels as if it never happened. Very appreciative of the team that took such great care of me. Every morning I wake up to the sound of my mechanical heart valve (something I will never get use to) and say thanks to Doctors Gabe Aldea, Gary Weeks and the amazing team at Northwest Hospital in Seattle.

Three weeks after surgery and am feeling great. Still dealing with the expected soreness around the incision and drain tubes but all is well.
Trying to adhere as closely as possible to all the rules I left the hospital with in terms of using my arms. Kind of tough to break habits.
If you have a pending surgery and are going the mechanical route, please take a look at the On-X heart valve. My surgeon had never implanted one as the University of Washington Medical Center network used only the St Jude mechanical valve. After much research and discussion, our amazing surgeon went the extra mile, as did the team at On-X, and I was the first in the UW system to have this valve implanted. It is the only mechanical heart valve approved by the FDA with a lower dose of Warfarin. Long-term this will make a huge difference.
For all who are having surgery in the coming weeks, I will keep you in thoughts and wish you a speedy recovery.

On April 9 I found out I needed an aortic valve transplant. It is amazing how one day you can feel like Superman and the next helpless. It was like someone flipped a switch on my health. One day working up an incredible sweat in the gym and the next day canceling my membership. Now just counting down the days till surgery on May 12.
Mary Myers You will feel like superman again! I felt the same way. But I felt like superwoman.

Meredith Bray I hope you didn't really cancel your gym membership, it'll be handy after yous tart cardiac rehab! I got an On-X valve last march, and go to the gym now 4-5 days a week - something I've NEVER done before in my life. It'll take a while before you're "back to normal" (which is a big fat lie - you never get "back" to normal, you create a *new* normal for yourself). Valve replacement surgery isn't really as daunting as you think it is. You'll be asleep for the hardest part, right? Honestly, the worst part is the emotional rollercoaster ride you're on right now - the weeks leading up to surgery. What else?

Jerry May Meredith - seems like you recovered quickly. I was hearing it would be closer to four months before I could get back into the gym. Though I'm also hearing everyone's results are different but good to hear it has worked out well for you.

Jerry May Sleep has been difficult. With May 12 fast approaching I'm trying to align my myself with the fact that all I have to do is tell everyone how much I love them, fall asleep, and wake up fixed!
Has anyone had the On-X heart valve installed? Every time I hear the word "installed" I feel like I'm talking about a car part!
And thanks to all of you for your encouraging words. We are definitely a strong community of people.
Meredith Bray Jerry, I am an overweight, sedentary, bus driver. I was in the gym for cardiac rehab at week 5. :)

Terry Shermeister Hi Jerry and swift recovery. I found out about the same time as you did and my Mitral Valve repair comes on Thursday May 14. You said it best about feeling great then finding out about valve issues. The great part about all this is that the outcomes after surgery are so good these days. I know the feelings and the sleep issues. Soon will be good and we both will be in recovery, getting back to the gym.
