On June 28th I had my aortic valve replaced using the standard method. I spent 5 days on the Cardiac Progressive Care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma. Fortunately I was able to transfer to the in-hospital rehab unit for 10 nights. There the excellent nursing, OT, and PT staff got me up and about. I even learned to walk without a cane. After discharge my sister was able to stay with me for five nights. It has all gone well. I am so glad I had this site for information and encouragement. The worst part was the anxiety before surgery, so glad I moved forward with the surgery within 2 weeks of the ultimatum.
Now just need to build up some strength, walk more, continue with medications and eventually be able to drive again. Then it will be time for Cardiac Rehab.

I am a 72 year old women, who always considered myself very strong and independent. Now I am scheduled for an aortic heart valve replacement on June 28th, and I am beginning to panic. I think part of it is the lack of control, and potential negative outcome of the surgery. On the other hand, I will get through this with positive thoughts and help from friends, family and God. I read Adam's book, and many of the journals on line. You are all so special to share this part of your lives.
Now I am going through a pre-op checklist getting everything in order, and planning neat things to do after I get home. It will be great to be able to walk without being winded, and to have more energy.
I do have a dog, and made arrangements for him to be boarded with our vet. I do walk with a cane, and my surgeon expressed concerns about how I will get around after surgery. Has anyone dealt with this?

Chris Vereb Hi Lynn. Keep walking a couple times a day if you can. Talk to as many people as you can for support and understanding. You will be able to do rehab after as well. I had a very positive experience in the hospital. This is my 1st day back home.
