Overall I am doing quite well, except for a sore throat had pre August 31 surgery. BUT I have a sort if bubbling/crackling sound sometimes in my upper chest when resting at an angle and opening my mouth. Anyone else had anything like that.I did not notice until I got OUT of hospital 4 days after surgery. I was afraid I would have to go back in. A Duke intern said in was normal and from the by pass. Dr. Hugh's nurse said she has no idea except maybe something to do with tubes down throat. Hmmmm? Anyone else with that and did it go away?
Otherwise I am happy to be "home" at my daughter's. I walked Duke Gardens, maybe 2 miles ( gardens inspire me!) Today we walked about 1 1/2 miles. Felt good. Somewhat tired, low hemoglobin. So grateful surgery is past and I had such a great surgeon and my risk of rupture is gone. A doctor came from Cleveland Clinic to be present during my surgery. He made rounds with my doctor and saw me on the week-end before my discharge with the other surgeon. The Nurse Practioners were all very resposive and sweet.

Darlene Smith Lynn, I did have a sort of bubbling/crackling sound at the very end of taking a breath in. I'd breath in, and then hear that sound, but I hear mine with my mouth closed. I really didn't think much of it and didn't ask. It eventually went away after a month or so. My surgery was on July 18 for reference.

Nicola Laker It could be your vocal chord. Mine unfortunately we're severely damaged whilst I was in ICU when they took me of the ventilator but had to re- insert the tubes as I still wasn't right. This could have been when the right side was damaged. I was also told by an ENT consultant it happens with heart surgery, or being under anesthetic for a long time, intubated and other various reasons.
I have hardly any voice at all, can't shout or sing and laughing is hard work and i get crackling noises and odd sounds whilst my mouth is closed almost like an involuntary tic. Speaking even makes me really tired out. Can't believe how much breathe it takes to speak! I'm waiting for yet another ENT consultant to see me to start therapy.
If you are concerned, I would speak to your Dr and get them to refer you to an ENT to check your vocal chords.

My valve, wheat and hemiarch arch surgery is scheduled at Duke University with Dr. Hughes on August 31. I wondered why I could not enter his name and Duke here. Thanks for responses with that. Duke is listed number 6 by U.S. News and Dr. Hughes has only 1% deaths with his surgeries. Starting to get some jitters! Lots of prep since flying end on month from Oregon. Will stay with daughter in N.C. Trying to keep the faith!

I had my mitral repair 12/7/15 at Duke, dr. Glower did mine mini thoricotomy. I was very happy with my surgeon, he was very caring checked on me personally everyday for my week stay. Had some great nurses and some poor ones, but when they are checking on you 24/7 they can't all be great. Overall I would highly recommend Duke. I have had hand and elbo surgery there to that we're very successful? if you have any question just ask.
Wanda Mroz My dr and hospital didn't appear either I don't think! Best of luck to you💞
Rita Savelis I think perhaps doctors and hospitals have to be "sponsored" to appear.
