Made our way to the Johns Hopkins Hospital at 5:15a this morning, and was checked in by 6a. By 6:50a, I was in my scrubs and ready for surgery. At 8a, I was in the OR and fast asleep. Dr. Cameron began surgery shortly after 8:40a, and I have been in surgery since then. [UPDATE 12:05P] Valve has been replaced, maze procedure is completed, and Dr. Cameron just came out to notify family that surgery is complete. Family is patiently waiting for me to wake up. I've gotten very good at blogging while under anesthesia. :)
I have upcoming mitral valve surgery in June. What I should expect? I am already in AFIB.
Denise Campbell Hi. Is the doctor leaving you in afib till then?
MADHU PURI Yes, I am on Dijoxin and diltiazem and coumodin.

Denise Campbell That would be a doctor question. Bi had mitral valve replacement on March 15. I'm on Coumadin and metoprolol. That helps hear rate and when I had afib before surgery that's is what I took. Are you in permanent afib? I didn't think they left you that way. Will you have help at home after surgery? That's the big thing.
Denise Campbell I'm sorry. I didn't read my post before sending it. Metoprolol helps regulate heart rate.

Denise Campbell Hi. I also had mitral replacement. I have a mechanical valve. Which will you get? Advice, make sure you have someone who can take care of you the first week or so home. You won't need much in the hospital. Walk as soon as you can. Take the stool softners. The nurses will take good care of you. I used a note pad till they took the breathing tube out. You won't remember a lot the first couple of days. God bless you. You will do great. Try to have someone with you the first few days after surgery while you're still in ICU.

Petey Bello Madhu, I agree with Denise. Make sure you have help when you return home. It's bright & noisy in the hospital so eye cover & ear plugs can help you sleep. I also brought boy shorts/boxers with me that came in handy getting in & out of bed & doing my daily walks in the hospital. Good luck to you!
