I was scheduled to have a mitral valve repair or possible replacement next week (April 4) but I currently have my first case of COVID. We have scheduled for 3 weeks later. I will be having minimally invasive surgery by Dr. Kerendi, here in Austin. Does anyone have experience with having surgery approximately 4 weeks after COVID? I think I’m going to be quite gun shy about being around people before surgery- I surely don’t want to get a cold or anything else! Do people go around in masks in the days or weeks before surgery to prevent illness?

Susan Lynn Marie - I'm sorry to hear you have Covid. I hope you have a quick recovery. To answer your question, I had my surgery before the pandemic and I stayed away from everyone for weeks except the medical professionals I had to see for my preoperative tests. My surgeon had an open spot in his schedule that I very happily booked - a simple cold would have pushed my date by several weeks.
Waiting is the hardest part of this process and I didn't want to do anything to prolong it. My advice is to do what you need to do be healthy going into your procedure. Surgery will be behind you, soon. Wishing you all the best!

Marie Grace Thanks for the support Susan, Klara, and J Alexander! I’m not taking Paxlovid. I have too many friends who had rebound Covid after taking that and my symptoms are mild, thank goodness. I think I will mask up at least a week before surgery. Waiting/anticipation are one of the hardest parts for me, and I’m ready to get on with my life!
