It's been 12 days since surgery and I am reacting badly to my pain medication... I have a severe intolerance to anything narcotic-based. I've switched to pushing ibuprofen and tylenol now but I am in so much pain. I wonder how long it normally takes for the pain to lessen? I had a complete open surgery.

Emily Rowley I too experience bad side effects of pain relief medication. So this time they are going to give me something else for my pain-not too sure yet. I was on regular ibuprofen Post-Op which was good but down fall is slow pain relief+body gets used to it therefore becoming less effective. I wasn't too bad with pain actual, it would come and go each month and came from my sternum/chest area. I got checked by my Cardiologist just to make sure no problems. All the best Paige 😊

Wanda Mroz Have your doc check you out. I had pain but really it wasn't that bad. Shoulder joint replacement hurts much worse. I was on regular Tylenol at 12 days and it worked. So if it's hurting a lot I'd ask too.

Clare Auten Sorry to hear your'e in so much pain. Pain meds made me nauseous and believe me, throwing up right now would not be fun for you. Have you talked to the doctor about different choices for pain meds. What type of pain is it? Many of us had shoulder and back pain. Pain when breathing could indicate some fluid in your lungs that hasn't cleared. I agree with the others. Call the doctor.

Christine Oliva Yes call your doctor about the pain. I had problems taking the pain med so I had to half the dose. I actually threw up the first day, Yikes. If you have a lot pain in the back, shoulders and neck that is expected, ouch I can still remember it especially if you have a previous injury like I had. Look at your incision, is it very red or puffy, drainage and do you have a temperature. Please check with your doctor to make sure it is not something wrong with the incision or Op itself. Unfortunately, some people have more pain than others but please double check nothing being ignored. The good news is should be getting better and after the second week it went from a 8.5 to 7 and each week it moved down. Are you walking that helped me. Good luck and I hope you start getting relief soon.

Paige Rupe Hi everyone! I halved my dose of hydrocodone (down to 2.5 mg) and now take it with something to eat always. My incision is beautiful, no problems there. I am going to take it real easy today and hopefully no more nausea. I am so thankful for all of your encouragement and advice! Thank you!
