Does anyone who has had an open-heart procedure for aortic valve replacement, have a louder heartbeat (to the point of feeling like heart bangs against sternum) when you cough, sneeze, yawn, or otherwise hold breath? I note this but haven't found anyone else talking about it. Saw surgeon last week and he isn't concerned-I asked if it was simply "reverberating" and he said that was a good description.

Marie Myers Yes, I noticed that right after my surgery and I have seen posts about that phenomenon. When I take a big, deep breath and hold it, I really feel my heart beating strongly. I attribute it to the increased cardiac output with the new valve. Totally normal, and you will get used to the new feeling.

Allen Carkner I do when I inhale deeply sometimes. I believe it is more able to shift after open heart surgery so when you lie on your chest or breath deeply this sensation can happen. It does with me. As if it is knocking on the rib cage.

Patricia Hubel Thank you all. When I figured out it wasn't the sternum, I would test it...and once, did in the car while driving and could feel it was the heart beating stronger...but I did it a few times to be sure and got a bit lightheaded - so no more testing things in the car!
