Thanks to you who wrote. The 8th I will be in Cath lab & then the surgery will be scheduled. So appreciate reading people's stories

Ray Farmer I had a coronary angiogram on last Thursday and was more anxious over that than the thought of the AVR surgery coming soon. It really is nothing to worry about, yes it can feel a bit strange but it is not painful and remember you will be dealing with a team of well-trained people who have done the procedure many times before.

Tavrs means longer wait to see if I am accepted in the study & then it's about random selection of either open heart or Tavrs. And no choice so why shouldn't I just go for open heart & get it rolling

Phyllis Petersen Sounds like a tough decision. TAVRs should be an easier recovery, but how long would you have to wait to find out? It would probably be less painful too. Get all the facts before deciding, and ask lots of questions.
Patti Kinsey Thanks Phyllis
It is tough. My mom had same valve replacement at 80 before TAVRS existed

Phyllis Petersen Good luck with making the decision. There are so many options these days, which is both good and bad. I was glad I went with the robotic repair. I can't believe how well I've progressed in 3 1/2 weeks.

I understand the post surgery pain of open heart from family members but not the Tavrs

Amy Steele Hi Patti! First, welcome to the site. You'll get lots of good information here. The type of surgery depends on a lot of things; age, health and other things that may need repair or replacement at the same time. I didn't have the option when replacing my aortic valve because I needed to have the aortic root replaced and also had an aneurism that was repaired. It's a very individual thing. That being said, I had a full sternotomy and am doing well three weeks out from surgery. I went home on post-op day 4 and haven't needed any of the heavy duty pain meds for more than two weeks. I hope the stories of others on this site will help you decide.

Joshua Trimberger Last thing I read was that TAVRS is only available for high risk patients currently. They are testing it in intermediate risk patients now, but all the data I saw was that the expected outcomes are the same if not better with TAVRS and a lot less pain. I was told that if I can hold off on my 2nd replacement for 10ish years that the FDA would most likely have approved TAVRS as the go to replacement

Diane Zeigler I really had hoped to have the TAVR surgery, but I was too young (69!) and too healthy. They would not approve me so I ended up with the OHS which really wasn't so bad.

Rita Savelis Don't know much about your personal situation but TAVR is for older patients who can't withstand OHS. OHS is a safer option at this point. Pain really varies. I had no "pain" after OHS. Lots of discomfort and other side effects, but no pain to speak of.
