Jeannette McLaughlin I would stay away from Pradaxa, if I were you. Google "Pradaxa lawsuits" and you'll see what I mean. Of the newer anticoagulants, Eliquis seems to be a popular choice. Good luck with your decision. As for A-Fib, check out Dr. Carolyn Dean's website.

I am 10 weeks post op and had been doing great. I was known to have diverticulosis but had had no symptoms. Being on coumadin has been hard because it has difficult to achieve therapeutic levels. So I decided to eat very little to no vegetables which made me have a flare of diverticulitis=bloating, pain, constipation.
I ended in hospital with a special concoction of antibiotics because of warfarin interacts with everything. I am still struggling with my diet. Anybody had anything similar. Any tips, ideas?
Happy Holidays to you all. May blessings and hoping 2017 is a Healthy year for all.

Phyllis Petersen Welcome! I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with this. I have diverticulosis and struggle with bowel issues, but thankfully I'm not on coumadin. I have chronic pain issues which put me on and off prescription pain meds, which causes their own problems, but mostly manageable. I hope you can get it all under control soon. How has your recovery been otherwise? What did you have done?

roseline hartmann I had only my aortic root repaired but on coumadin cause I popped in and out of Afib 4 days after surgery. Went home with sinus rhythm and then at week 6 did afib again which led me to cardioversion.
And just discharged from this flare up. What meds are you on for GI issues? Have they mentioned surgery?

Meredith Bray My health advisor suggested I NOT change my diet in order to lessen any negative impact the surgery had on my life. My INR didn't level out for about 6 months, and I still have the occasional mountain/molehill problem. Her viewpoint was that i had enough to worry about and be concerned about and remember that I shouldn't have to worry about eating/not eating green stuff. Just to continue on eating like I always have. I'm interested to hear what your doctor or coumidin manager/nurse has to say.

Rita Savelis It can take some time to achieve therapeutic levels (I wish someone had told me that rather than have me worry so much about why I wasn't stable and why it took months). It is common. Your body (liver) will eventually get used to the med and you will become more stable. But your INR will continue to go up and down. I suggest staying with a regular diet - everything in moderation. Eat what is best for your diverticulosis. Your coumadin level will then adjust to this regular diet. This is the medical advice I received and it has helped me.

Eating very little to no veggies is not the way to manage your Coumadin levels (INR). Green leafy veggies are the ones to be careful with as they are high in vitamin K which thickens the blood BUT you do not have to avoid them completely. Example; If you have two salads a week continue with eating them two times a week, every week, the doctor will then adjust the medication amount to your diet. Consistency in diet is the way to manage the levels. I've been on Coumadin for a long time and can hold a INR of 2.5 to 2.8 most of the time this way.

Carolyn Bowles I am 3 weeks post aortic and mitral valve replacement and there was such an emphasis put on INR levels that I, too, panicked when it did not level out. I have no veins to speak of so it is torture to go through even more testing than I ever dreamed. I have relaxed about the levels now and just focus on healing and living my second chance life. Hugs to you-I DO understand!

Phyllis Petersen Because I just have the pockets, I'm not on any medicines specific to that. I take colace or milk of magnesia if I'm having constipation. I may have to discuss further with the doctor. I'm sorry you're having A-fib problems. It's far from uncommon and I'm thankful not have that issue so far. I also know not to think I'm completely out of the woods this soon after surgery, just from what I see on this site. Hopefully, you'e in the home stretch now.

Phyllis Petersen Aaaagh! I've had occasional bouts of depression, but nothing lasting, thank the Lord. The A-fib seems to be such a hard thing to get right for people. And the drugs all have nasty side effects. I hope they get this under control quickly, so you can move forward without fear.
