George Gardopee Tim : I also was a little short of breath after surgery (and I was not before surgery) when walking, especially uphill. It was noticeable for the first two weeks or so after but is progressively less so - I’m now a little over three weeks post-surgery. I suspect it has to do with the way they collapse your lungs during the procedure. It may take a bit to get everything working again. I’m 69 and not in particularly good shape.

Deena Z Congrats, Timothy. You will get stronger every day and will see major progress over the next two weeks. Take it easy on stairs and hold your heart pillow close to your chest when you sneeze. All downhill from here on.

Thomas Brusstar Tim, every big surgery like this involves blood loss, and they like to avoid just transfusing blood all the time. So they let you get pretty low on hemoglobin, rather than add the risk of transfusion. So I was 9 instead of 15 or 16 on hemoglobin. That explains weakness/ fatigue. Your body will replace hemoglobin quickly, so within a few weeks you'll be back to normal. Good luck, but be patient. Lots of protein and iron in the diet now!

I'm at ease with the on-x aortic valve. My surgery is upcoming, I'm dizzy from the severe stenosis. I keep reading about Ross procedure, which is fascinating, but time is not on my side plus it's not widely performed by surgeons. I'm 39 years old in good shape. I asked my surgeon about minimally invasive procedure (not opening up the whole sternum) and he told me that there is more risk and if I want the safest way is to open the sternum. I'm really worried since I have ocular myasthenia gravis, which is well controlled. I'm Just worried about after the operation and how weak I will be after all the anesthesia and pain meds. Any thoughts? Thanks everyone

Marie Myers I definitely felt weak and tired for 2-3 weeks after my surgery. Part of it stems from the anemia caused by blood loss, and some from the effects of surgery itself. If you have the history of ocular myasthenia graves, I know anesthesia will be very careful with the muscle relaxants they use during surgery, as you may have a greater effect from them in the first 24 hours post surgery. I would say to expect to take a lot of naps, and pace yourself as to how your body feels. I needed a shower chair to sit on for a few days after my surgery, and my husband was very helpful with meal preparation. Having someone to help you for 2 weeks is a good idea, I think. Wishing you all the best!
Timothy Stoner Thank you for your response as it will help me greatly. Tim

Martin Smith Hello Timothy! Wish there was a surefire way to avoid the pre-operation anxiety. Some ideas: attend to the data that is heavily weighted in favour of successful outcomes. Avoid dwelling on the other very rare and unlikely outcomes. Discuss your feelings with people you're closest to. This can be a good time to remind loved ones how you feel about them. I found those gestures made me feel lighte when I was finally wheeled into surgery. Make plans and put time aside to accommodate possible post-op fatigue. Extended fatigue may not prove to be an issue, but if it is, you're ready to deal with it. Looking forward to hearing how your operation was a success and the healing process well underway. Best wishes!
Timothy Stoner Thank you, Martin. I'm at ease and ready for my heart to be back to normal as it can be.
