W. Carter From what I have read they will use the Edwards Intuity pericardial aortic valve which is a transcatheter heart valve and study you for 5 years to see if your still kickin'. The mortality rate with transcatheter valves is higher than conventional OHS so at the present time it is only being used on high risk patients. It's your call, no one else can make your decision.

Your heart valves regulate blood flow but when advanced valve disease causes problems, valve replacement surgery may be necessary. Surgeons look to two trials on new approaches to improve on patient outcomes.

W. Carter, is the mortality rate higher because transcatheter valve replacement is usually done on higher risk patients or because the procedure is riskier and actually causes higher rates of death (even in healthy people)? Thanks for sharing this great info!

W. Carter Laura from what I have read it is a risky operation at the present time. Like you said another cause for high mortality rates is because it is primarily being used on elderly patients that are diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis and who are high-risk or too sick for open heart surgery. In other words they already have one foot in the grave before the TAVR. :-)
