Andreas I just read your post on my account. I am 50 and had my Aortic Valve replaced as well. I went with the tissue valve instead of mechanical. I did this primarily for 3 reasons, 1st is that I did not want to take blood thinners for the rest of my life, 2) is that now if the valve fails or need replaced they can do a TAVR the next time, but by then who knows TAVR may be the standard.

Felix Cherny William! Both AHA, BHA and European Heart Associations do not recommend the tissue valves to anybody under 60. There is no guarantee that a tissue valve will last even 5 years in you, due to the calcination issues. And there is no guarantee that they can safely do TAVR or other procedure in 5 years. Plus, there is no long term data on TAVR. It’s your choice after all, but based on what I read, more and more people chose the tissue valves based on the belief that “in 10 years a miracle will happen”

It is a tough decision to make regarding the choice of valve. If you scroll 19 days back in the patient news feed, you can read the journals of Rune Pedersen. He has extensive discussions on types of valves (mechanical vs biological) and also the Ross procedure. You might get a lot of info from his journal. I myself, chose a tissue valve ( biological) in order to avoid blood thinners. I was 63 at the time of surgery. At age 50, it is worth considering the mechanical valve. What does your surgeon suggest? Good luck in your journey!
