Hi Andria,
I am new to this community and looking over the recent posts my attention was drawn to your location, Melbourne.
I am in Melbourne too and am currently waiting for surgery to repair (or replace) my mitral valve. I will be going to the Alfred when the time comes but at present have no idea how long I will have to wait. The waiting is the worst part so far.
I will follow your progress with interest and send you my best wishes. It was lovely to see that this community includes others from Australia, :)
I hope you will reap huge rewards from your successful surgery,
Best wishes, Roger

Andria Pugh Hi Roger,
Welcome. I couldn't find a good Aussie forum or website and assume that this site was set up by Adam as a global networking site. I have found it to be informative and reassuring as much as it can be before surgery.
You can ask whatever questions you have and there will be someone whom can help.
It's been a real help for me to share this part of my life with people who understand what I am going through.
I was lucky that I had a fixed date for my surgery and from identification of my murmur through to operation was only a total of 8 weeks, leading up to the operation I was extremely scared and I feel for you as you await your surgery.
Have your ICU bag prepared and a separate ward bag prepared, little things make a difference to make your stay more comfortable......I took my own v shaped pillow and it was a godsend from the minute I was in ICU it wrapped around me and allowed me to sleep on my back easier.
I took in earplugs but actually didn't use them, was too tired in icu and luckily had my own room when moved out of icu, but prepare for a share so take ear phones and ear plugs with you.
I'm no expert and only day 9 post op but if you have any questions, let me know :)
Take care
Andria
How kind of you to reply at length, and thank you for your invitation to ask any questions. I will take you up on your offer as questions come to mind but will not trouble you until you are a little further down the road to recovery.
Your suggestion for separate bags for ICU and the ward is something I would not have thought of, ever!

Well done with your exercising! Crikey... 6 laps of the ward sounds a lot but I guess spreading it across the day and not all at once is best lol π° I think you just aim for doing a bit more each day... without completely exhausting yourself! ππΌ
Very proud of you - you've done so well and been so brave considering a matter of weeks ago you didn't know anything about all this stuff. Keep up the good work and you'll be back home soon seeing all those kitties π± π

Andria Pugh Seems to be extremely common yet very little admitance that heart problems are more than likely to occur. Not that there is anything they can do to stop the heart issues but people need to be aware and get monitired. I had very few symptoms and just by chance my heart murmur was picked up and i have severe aortic stenosis. So there needs to be an awareness campaign for Hodgkins disease survivors who had radiotherapy during 80's and early 90's. When i get through this i am going to do something about it. π

Hello Andria, thank you for your response to my question, I like yourself, was curious. I wish you a successful surgery and a problem free post op . I think my surgery is going to be at the beginning of July sometime, but may be earlier as I am marked down as urgent and my aortic valve struggling. I cannot go in quickly as I am on Warfarin, but may get an earlier date than July????!! I just won't be able to request a cancellation. My thoughts and prayers will be with you, along with others on the site with O.H.S this month. Stay in touch and we can maybe compare valves... haha. Best. Wishes, Barb.xx
