barrett burris I wore the gown the entire time I was in the hospital. When I would get up to go for walks, they would put a second gown on backwards, so between the two, (one opened in the back, the other in the front), I was covered and the world was a safe place. :) I hope the bra they're recommending isn't uncomfortable but you may end up appreciating it because of its convenience. When I started getting out of bed to go to the bathroom, the hassle of unhooking me from all the wires and machines was frustrating. Continued prayers for you.

Hi Barrett, Well, if you're like a lot of us, you'll probably be too low-energy for a while to need much stimulation. And the caregivers will give you plenty of things to do--walking in the halls, your spirometer, small exercises, etc. I wound up for days just staring at the TV and wondering, do people really watch this stuff all day? Took lots of naps too--but be careful: if you sleep too much during the day, you may find it hard to sleep at night.
Also, let your visitors know politely that you might not be up to really lengthy, highly chatty visits. Visitors will want to keep your spirits up, but you might not have the energy to keep up with it.
Clothing tip: don't bring pullovers for your trip home. You'll want the button-up kind. The reason, of course, is your incision and keeping your arm movements as "close" (not stretchy) as possible. The nurses and P.T.'s will help you master the right technique.
One last tip: my own worst experience was constipation, because I waited too long to deal with it. As my nurse said, "Hospital time is different from regular time"--and the days just went by "vaguely" for me. Before I knew it, I'd gone a week without a solid BM and it was horrible! So: if you haven't had a BM in two days MAX, ask your nurse to give you something. S/he may not ask about this (mine didn't), so it's up to you.
Every day will get better and better (with perhaps a little down-bump now and then).
Best, Artie

I'm just wondering what size is your aneurysm and what is your valve measurement? I'm interested because I have the same diagnosis and this coming Tuesday surgery was scheduled. Even though I have a peace, I still have a bit of "is it really time." Thank you..

Elaine Cutri I agree with Daniel and Ruth. 5.6 cm is getting up there. I thought the new range was around 5.0 cm for BAV patients. There was a article posted 1-2 years ago in JAMA regarding the surgical range for Ascending Aortic Aneurysm in BAV patients. Sorry I can't find the exact date, lost my copy of the article. I went to Cleveland Clinic for a 3rd surgical opinion and read their outcome reports. Their results are much better than the national average and much better than what the surgeons in my area gave me. See my story for more details. Best wishes!

Hi Barrett. Yes, was hoping for the David procedure but my valve was too far gone when they got in there. Make sure to get a second opinion on surgery. Both of my opinions recommended surgery and I was measuring just about the same as you. Try not to worry about the surgery too much. It's not a walk in the park, but it's not anything you can't handle. Let me know if you have any other questions. I went with the trifecta valve.

barrett burris Thanks so much for the intel and concern. I have been reading up on minimally invasive options but haven't been able to find anyone in Houston that does 'em. Will keep looking. Is the trifecta valve the biological valve made of cow or pig valves? Thats what I chose, don't want to take rat poison the rest of my life if I can avoid it. Boy, my friends are never gonna let me live that one down (they are of the misguided opinion that I already have bovine and swine attributes). Seeing you and others on this site so healthy and active helps me. I hope Playboy and I (my horse) won't miss too much time off the trails. Thanks again.

Pat Bluemel This is my mindset and I told my surgeon this (he does both minimal and full) "take as much room as you need to do the best job, I am not that vain." 13 inches of scar later and 3 drain tube scars I am ok with it all. The Trifecta is bovine and porcine. They will ask you at your intake what your stack ranking is. I told them repair first, bio valve second, mechanical valve third. I fully believe they will have TAVR ready to go for round II of this, and if not I'll be in my 50s and have seen amazing results from many on this site that are older than that.
barrett burris Thanks again and good luck to you and everyone.
