I was in j6 311. We are located about 100 miles south of Cincinnati on 71. So you are still experiencing pain. My sternum is completely healed and has no pain. What an experience, wheeled in, seeing drs on one side of you and a heart and lung machine on the other. All that was left was hope as the team starts to stick catheters in me. Life is good!

Hi Ben, sorry we never were able to meet again. How are you feeling? I still have some pain near the drainage incision along with a little drainage. I've been walking over a mile a day. I need to learn if the pain is normal or if it is a result of the infection. Where is home for you. Hope your doing well. Bill

Ben Kois Hi, Bill! I did ask my nurse if you were in my cardiac step-down unit ( J-51) but she wasn't sure if you were or not. They were wanting to discharge me on Tuesday (2/17) but I opted to stay till Wednesday afternoon. I developed some sinus problems from the O2 and recycled room air. I had a post-nasal drip that wouldn't quit. I could not stop coughing to save my life. I coughed so much and so hard that I actually loosened some of the cartilage about inch to the right of my incision. It's still pretty tender and I wear a chest compression wrap, which really helps. But, that too, is getting better every day. Other than that, I'm pretty much pain free!
I went back 2/25 for a follow-up. They were very pleased with everything and said it was a success. Another follow-up on 3/20. Hopefully, the results will be consistent. I feel absolutely 100% better already...just some pain that I can control mostly with Motrin.
I'm glad to hear you are up walking around and it sounds like everything is going well for you - minus your infection at the drainage site. I'm sure that will pass eventually. I live in Wooster, OH. It's about an hour south of the Clinic. I read that you're from KY. Which part if I may ask? Feel free to keep in touch - you can message me here or email

Ben Kois Thank you so much! Getting ready to head to Cleveland here shortly. With having to "report for duty" at 6am, I got a hotel room so the morning commute would be a little smoother. My spirits and nerves have been great thus far...today has been a little overwhelming. I live by myself and I've spending the day (I'm a huge procrastinator...) trying to make sure everything is under wraps as I will be staying with family to recover instead of coming back home. Pretty sure I've forgot something but it's too late now! Can't wait to join that recovery group....I'm ready to start feeling better!
Ben Schraegle Hang in their man, you're gonna be fine! We are praying for you! All the best!

Ben, Dr. Pettersson repaired my MV on 12/4. My result and recovery have been excellent. Back to work in 4 weeks following a median sternotomy (9" incision). My pain levels have been mild throughout the recovery and I am feeling great. I'm doing a 6 week rehab program meeting 3 times per week. I'm just about done with week 4 and have enjoyed the routine. I do recommend rehab and feel that it has jump-started an exercise regimen that I can stick to. Dr. Pettersson is as incredible as you have learned... I hope your experience at CC surpasses your expectations as it did for me! Good luck on 2/13 - Jeff

Ben Kois Jeff -- Thank you for the kind words! They're greatly appreciated and I'm glad to hear that you're healing very well! Dr. Pettersson plans to go through my previous open heart surgery scars. Hopefully, the scar tissue is minimal. I've always gone to the CC my whole life for cardiac appointments and they also performed an 8 vertebrae spinal fusion in '05. The results from that were fantastic. I have zero limitations and still can golf on a weekly basis. I have already set up a rehab program with the local hospital. Hopefully I will get the same recovery results as you!
