Thank you for the message! Inspiring! My concern is that I feel pretty good right now. I get fatigued at times, but have the luxury to rest. I get slightly SOB walking a mile a day or going up a flight of stairs. The idea of feeling worse after surgery instead of better, and taking maybe a year to recover is discouraging. I keep reminding myself it is only going to get worse if I do nothing. I guess this is true. And I wouldn’t want to be much older for the surgery. I hope we can keep in touch a bit!

Deb Yednak Valerie everyone is different. I had other issues going into it that caused me to take longer to get what I could consider 100%. So you can only go by what your body does. Eat healthy, walk if you can so that you are in good health going into it. You will be fine. No one comes out of open heart feeling like roses! But I will say I woke up in no pain and thought wow...I thought I was going to be in pain! LOL You have to work to get your strength back and get back up on that horse so to speak. It just takes some people longer than others. I have a classmate from high school that had the same identical surgery 2 months before me ( same age) and she went on a cruise to her sons destination wedding 7 months after surgery. So dont let discouragement enter into you thoughts. I only had 30 days to get ready for surgery - it came on me that fast. Its encouraging that we can have our life extended no matter how long it takes to get over it. I am certainly glad that I had the surgery otherwise I may not have been here to write this email! So take care of yourself now, and stay positive. Its just something that has to be done and you will do it and get on with your life. Yes we can stay in touch. No problem.

Deb Yednak Thanks Valerie. You will do great - I got through it, and just stay positive and understand there is no real choice, ya have to do it! The flip side will be so much better than before surgery. It took me a good year to work through it, and here I am on year 2 - pretty close to 100%. Take care of yourself in the meantime - the better shape you are in the better it is for you.
Why was the TARV not a option? I thought that was for people in your age group..?
I hope you well and a speedy recovery.
Pamela Gregory Sorry to answer for Deb, but I believe TAVR can never be done on a bicuspid valve.

Deb Yednak Jason Hyrup, ...My valve was so hardened there was a risk of plaque and caclification breaking off, and also it was almost down to the root. Even tho I was 71 at the time I was in good shape other than the valve......it was felt that I would have a good outcome with open heart and save the TAVR procedure for later in life if I needed a replacement.

Deb Yednak Pamela Gregory, it is possible to do TAVR on selected bi-cuspid AV's but mine was so bad I was not a candidate. In other words, it can be done on low risk patients regardless of the valve anatomy.
