Jay:
I enjoyed reading your story. Like you, I have had my condition (aortic stenosis - possibly bicuspid) monitored for 5-6 years now. Although I have some things that happen that make me wonder if I am having symptoms, I can't really identify anything that I know for sure are symptoms. I still do cardio workout several times a week (30 minutes on stationary bike or elliptical) and moderate weights and core workout. I'm getting ready to turn 64 in June and I suppose I'm in fairly good shape other than some aches and pains now and then. I have been seeing a cardiologist where I live in Lakeland, FL. He is a good doctor but not a heart valve specialist. I have a video consult with heart valve surgeon, Marc Gerdisch, who is associated with Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, and who has done several presentations on this site. It was helpful and he recommended increasing my Echo schedule to every 6 months. My cardiologist didn't seem to give much value to Dr. Gerdisch's report or recommendation. My last Echo was last May and I have another scheduled this May. The last one put me just under the severe rating. I have also done a little research on Dr. Kevin Accola, a heart valve surgeon at Advent in Orlando, and who also has appeared several times on this website. Sorry for the length of this message - but I wanted to give you a bit of background. Since your condition seemed to be similar to mine, I am interested in your initial symptoms, what tests you were having leading up to surgery, your experience with Mayo and your surgeon, and what type of valve you went with and why. Any input you can provide would be appreciated. If you would rather have a phone call, I'm fine with that (813) 340-6586. Thank you, Mike Wynn.

Jay, thanks for sharing your story. I too have had a bicuspid AV for some time and so far asymptomatic. Get an echo each year to monitor status. Have thus far always been mild to moderate range. I am in the Central FL area and am not real confident that doctors in my area would be the right ones if I do have to have surgery. I am wondering what caused you to make the move to Mayo in Jacksonville and what type of valve did you go with?
Thanks,
Mike

Jay Heagerty Mike, I researched doctors who had significant experience with the aortic aneurysm aspect of my surgery. The top two that I found were at Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic in Florida. I chose Mayo for two reasons: one, Dr Kevin Landolfo was well credentialed with several hundred surgeries like mine. two: Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville was a better location for me as I live in SW Florida. The Mayo Clinic has a great team and I would go back there in a second.
Regarding the valve, I went with a bovine valve as I live an active lifestyle and did not want to be on blood thinners the rest of my life as I was only 59 when I had my surgery. It is a personal choice and whatever you decide will be the right choice for you.
If I can answer any additional questions, please let me know. Best of luck to you with your journey.

Mike Wynn Thanks Jay. One thing that I am struggling with a bit is when to make a move to the doctor I would want to do a surgery. I have read on this website that there is a move toward doing surgery prior to the existence of symptoms (at least before sever symptoms). I wonder if just continuing to go to my local cardiologist and getting the annual Echo is putting me at risk. I know you had an aneurysm which probably makes your situation more urgent, but was there a symptom that caused you to go ahead and engage with the doctor at Mayo?

Rose Madura Mike, if I may jump in here and say that, at least in my case, I worked with my cardiologist who ordered the echos. When he told me it was time based on the echo, I got a 2nd opinion and then switched to the cardiologist who gave me the 2nd opinion because I liked him better. He agreed with the need to go ahead. The cardiologist then did a heart catheterization and after that, contacted the surgeon (of my choice but who he recommended) whose office scheduled a consultation. That's the first time I met the surgeon and the next time I saw him was after the surgery. I hope this is what you wanted to know. I didn't think I showed symptomatic because I attributed it to getting older but there were define signs that I guess I chose to ignore. Now I feel great.

Jay Heagerty I wanted a surgeon's opinion as to when I should do surgery. One of the first things my surgeon said to me was he would not do the surgery until the risk of not doing the surgery exceeded the risk of the surgery. It also gives you time to develop a rapport with the surgeon.

Jay Heagerty Ana, the surgery went well. I was in the hospital from Sunday the 22nd until Sunday the 29th. We remained in Jacksonville until Tuesday the 31st. Dr indicated that if he had the same knowledge after surgery a year ago, he would have done the surgery then. I was blessed. The Mayo Clinic staff was outstanding in everyway. They make you feel as comfortable as possible in what we all know is an uncomfortable few days post op. So far recovery is going well and I look forward to continuing the journey. Thank you for your concern.
