I’m three months post surgery from mitral valve repair at UW Madison by Dr. de Oliveira (was he your surgeon as well?). While your post about needing a 2nd surgery gave me pause (for my own personal reasons), I love your positive attitude and wish you the best this week!

Hi Jayne! My name is Barb Blackwell and I lived in Charkeston with my husband for almost 10 years - in Mt. Pleasant! 3 years ago we moved to England to help with his Mom & Dad and are still here although both of them have now passed. I also had MV repair, back in 2000, and went out to the Cleveland Heart Clincin for it. (Lived on Cape Cod at the time and Cardiologist sent me there). Have just been told now that that I have severe regurgitation and the valve will need to be replaced, so awaiting my surgery date. I had several cardiac procedures at Roper, and loved my Charleston Cardiologist, Dr. Wm. Grossman. He is fantastic! I wish you the very best this week and will keep you in my thought and prayers that all goes smoothly! Take care and I will follow your story! God bless, Barb

Hi Jayne, For some reason this didn't post on your question thread below so... having my surgery this coming Monday (AVR) and doing a mechanical valve. I have RA and on Humira which my RA Doctor had me stop several weeks before the surgery and told me not to resume until 2 weeks after as long as everything was going well. Reason being that she advised not having a suppressed immune system because of the RA meds during and immediately after surgery - want to be able to fight off any infections. She consulted with some folks about valve replacements and RA (mechanical vs. tissue) and she came back and told me that there is not a lot of data out there regarding impact with RA to valve replacements options. Not a lot of info for you but good luck to you moving through this process... Pat

Hi Jayne, just read your post and story. I am 52 with four children, 23, 21, 21, and 17. I have severe regurgitation of mitral valve too. I had it repaired in 1997 when my youngest was 6 months old. I am meeting with valve specialist on Wednesday to discuss details, but i am fairly certain a second surgery is in my near future. Anyway, I just wanted to reach out to you and let you know you are not alone, and I am thinking all my best thoughts for you, healing and peace, Kate

Jayne Martinko Oh my goodness, Kate I did not see your post until now. THank you for your kind words. I am "on the board" and ready to get on the other side of this. Must be terrifying looking at a second surgery, I cannot even imagine. Being a type A personality I have planned and over planned my recovery and now just need to go with the flow. The surgery and pain do not scare me, it is the sitting around with nothing to do.
