Hi Joseph!
The cause of my mitral regurgitation is different than yours, but I can certainly relate to having a Type A personality, haha. I’m also a nurse and have anxiety so the combination of all of those things is hard when waiting for a plan to be put in place. I briefly read your posts, but I love the details you include. I am still waiting for my initial surgical consult, but am hoping to also find a surgeon who can do a robotic repair...I am only 41 and I don’t want to be off work forever (though a very long break from nurse stress would be great).
Any advice from one Type A to another?
Janelle

Advice? Feels a little silly given your expertise in health care for me to be giving you advice but I guess the best advice I can give is to accept the pace of recovery. Some days you will feel like you can climb a mountain. Others you will feel like you just need a day off. Take the day off! You really do need to listen to the feedback your body is providing.
Eat well leading up to your surgery. But you already know that.
Judging by your picture you’re not in the northeast but if you would consider Yale in New Haven CT as a potential destination, my surgeon was amazing, and the entire unit was perfect. Not a single average nurse. 100% exceptional.

There are some pros to being a nurse in this situation in that I am more likely to understand medical terms, tests, etc., but there are cons too. I know things can and do go wrong, either from complications or human error…this knowledge couples really well with my anxiety 🙄. The other downside is that I see/hear of bad things that happen at my very own hospital which makes me less trusting of their care. Still will meet with the surgeons there to hear what they have to say but likely won’t feel comfortable having surgery done there. My current insurance only covers care with them, but will be able to increase for next year to get out of network benefits. I live in FL currently.

Janelle Hurst Your advice to accept the pace of recovery is great advice… I have read many people’s accounts of their recovery and it seems incredibly varied and often includes set backs or frustration with progress. Hard to know what to expect for my own recovery, but if I place my focus on taking it day by day and practicing self care above anything else I’m sure that will limit some of the frustration.

Just read your journal. Thank you so much for sharing in such detail your recovery story. It’s given me so much to think about but most importantly it’s really helped calm some of my fears for my upcoming Ross procedure. Glad things are steadily improving for you. Stay strong!!!

Joseph, things take time! You have to go at your own pace. I had my surgery on June 18, 2020 so I am now exactly 9 months post surgery, TODAY! Just be active every single day and you will eventually meet goals that you set. I am actually meeting with my cardiac rehab supervisor tomorrow to review some goals. :).
Be well!
