Joshua Trimberger Yep, I am back to hiking, hockey, and a few other things I also enjoy as well. I think one of the positives in this ordeal is that i learned not to wait on others or organizations to make things happen. I spent to much time in the last two years with my life on pause waiting on/for others/organizations and my new outlook is that I'm going to move on with life and they can either move with me or if the fates a line and our schedules line up then so be it but i no longer actively wait for opportunities that may or may not happen ! I hope you are doing well! I have only been on here periodically the last few months!

Joshua Trimberger Thanks, finishing it up felt nice, but at the same time I wish they could have pushed me a bit harder but I hit my METS goal of 1600 (which they said was just crazy high). I got on the ice today and my legs weren't in as good shape as I would have liked but I guess nothing really can prepare you the stress playing hockey puts on specific muscles when you haven't done it in a long time.

Glad you're doing better, the first weeks are hard; I watched a lot of the Food Network even though I couldn't eat anything nutritious. It was hard to read or concentrate on anything; I took naps and tried to walk a couple times per day. You will be turning the corner soon; it takes awhile to metabolize the meds and anesthesia. Glad you're staying aware of the depression; I would get upset easily right after my surgery but it's passed now.
Thinking of you. Take care.

Joshua Trimberger I'm doing a lot better, thanks for asking! I finally got discharged yesterday after 5 days in the ICU and 4 days in critical care. 9 days was a lot more than anyone was expecting but glad to be well enough to go home! It's been a bit painful at home. Since I'm up doing more I'll do something easy and my body will scream at me. I ended up sleeping 15+ hours my first night home. So it will be nice to get some actual rest for the first time since surgery.

Thinking of you; my surgery and first weeks home seem so long ago even though it's only been 9 weeks! Give yourself time and patience.
Joshua Trimberger Thanks, I'll have great care when I get home as well! Just have to get there first!

The CT will reveal a clear picture of the aorta; when my husband and I saw mine last December it was very clear how much it had enlarged. Measurements are taken as well; a bicuspid valve will enlarge the aorta over time.

Maureen Breault I had both done; it was open heart surgery in order to get to the aorta. But I'm not a surgeon, mine couldn't do a less invasive procedure because of the problem. One step at a time, see what the aorta looks like. They'll base their recommendations on the CT. You certainly don't want a new valve and a sick aorta. My bi valve was working fine with no stenosis; the aorta was the dangerous piece of the equation but the valve caused it! Crazy, right? Oh well, now I have a Dacron aorta and a carbon valve; it was the best choice for me.

Terrific news on finding a good fit; I had my first heart cath the day before surgery; not the greatest timing and wow, not bad during the procedure but the after effects! The bruising for me was unbelievable. I was glad I had all the trauma done to my body all at once. I had no idea what I was in for with that cath.
Interesting choice on the tissue valve; but you are able to have a less invasive surgery than the full OH. It pays to doc shop! I got a second opinion and was glad I did. You definitely have to feel comfortable with your surgeon.
Being an athlete you should have an easier recovery than the average bear. I'm a lot older than you and in excellent physical condition and I'm amazed at my progress. You've got youth on your side! It's important to follow doctor's orders with recovery and attend cardiac rehab. Rehab has been great for me; they can adjust your program as needed. And you can always ask about adding something or making what you're doing harder. They monitor you and will tell you your optimum zones. It includes weights which I was anxious to get back to. Don't be alarmed at your muscle loss; you'll get it back!
Good luck and looking forward to hearing more.

Joshua Trimberger I was SO nervous about meeting with this new surgeon after that disaster of a meeting with the first surgeon. But everyone from reception, to the nurse and PA were amazing!!! When I had the cath done it wasnt to bad. I don't recall having any bruising from that. But I had a TEE a few mins prior and that was super traumatizing. But since then my cardiologist has switched hospitals and they make sure you are drugged up and out of it before anything starts so I would imagine the cath would have similar protocol. I have been sitting around so long not being able to do anything, Im actually looking forward to rehab which is unheard of for me as working out is one of my least favorite things! But I just want to be able to do stuff again! He also I should be able to hit the ice again in 8-10 weeks after surgery. So with rehab I'm hoping to hit the ice running and see if I can remember how to play goalie! Maybe I can even make a few camps in the fall...but either way it will be great to have a 100% functioning heart.

Joshua Trimberger I am meeting this surgeon friday morning so I hope I have a better connection with him then the guy I met with last week. I have talked to my insurance company a couple times about this surgery and they assure me that once I pay my remaining 2k to meet my out of pocket max everything else will be covered 100%....thats what they are saying now but I'm sure there will be a few hidden bills that may pop up but we will deal with those issues as they arise! My cardiologist called back today and he wasnt familiar with this surgeon but a few of the nurses and other cardios at his practice knew the surgeon and said he is a great surgeon and MCDallas was a good hospital to have it done. So the plan is to go there as long as he doesn't "scare me off" during our meeting. Thanks for the advice!

Joshua Trimberger I considered going to Mayo or Cleveland or UAB in alabama (my sister runs there cardiac research clinic) But my cardiologist talked me out of it. He said some of the best surgeons in the country are in Dallas and its a fairly easy and common procedure that just about anyone can do successfully now a days. My insurance is the biggest issue. I looked at Houston last week and the top 2 cardiac rated hospitals are not covered. Nor is Dr. Ott. when I just checked. I have an appointment with Dr. Todd Dewey friday morning. He seems to be a good guy from the interviews I have watched and has a bunch of cowritten medical journals and was one of the pioneers and trainers of TAVR. From all the research I did on him. He seems like a great surgeon. I just hope he is a great human being as well as I need to be comfortable with the person if I'm going to be comfortable having them cut me up.

Jean Raber I am a TMVR candidate. Good to know that regional hospitals are doing this more routinely. I hope you like your surgeon, though I'd opt for his having good recovery stats over personality. My mom's cardiac surgeons were as personable as the hind wheels on a hearse, as Dad used to say. But they don't really have much to do with you after you're zipped up. It's the nurses and hospital that makes the difference, I think.

I just saw your questions about Baylor Heart in Plano; apologize for not getting back to you. Can't say enough great things about the facility and care received. Patients start and end in a suite that have a pull out couch of sorts for family members or there are several motels in the vicinity. Every staff member I can me in contact with was professional, friendly and caring.
I was pleased with Dr. Ryan, his office is run well. He does run extremely late to appointments though has PAs to take up the slack. My post op was with a PA, which I was ok with but surprised. I never saw him at the hospital before surgery which I thought was weird. He did stop by a couple of evenings after it and had contact with my husband. His PAs took care of my needs during my stay. As my cardiologist says; the surgeons are the cutters! That's what they do; cut and repair/fix! He's one of the best but I was told anyone in his group is excellent. Look for a doc with experience with your particular medical problem.
I see you're a hockey player; my son played for Plano Senior High and is now playing on an adult league. My husband also played until he sustained too many injuries; getting a little too old! I also have a niece who was part of the first women's team at Towson(Maryland) University.

I saw this in my newsfeed. I had surgery at The Heart Hospital on 12/1 with Dr. Brinkman. I had a similar experience as Maureen. It was one of the most well run hospitals I have been in. The nurses and staff seemed to like their job. I also had most interaction with PA, but saw Dr. Brinkman each day I was in hospital. Released after 3 days with minimally invasive AVR. Back to work after 6 weeks. Very pleased overall.

Hey Joshua!
I am not an athlete, but I do play a lot of 4.0 tennis, about 4 times a week for two hours each time. I am 71 and had my valve replaced in Oct 2013. I was having terrible pain in my chest during my matches, so painful I was hanging on to the fence between games! I drank a lot of chlorophyl water back then, thinking I had an acid problem.
Well, the morning came when I woke up with a 165 heart rate. My valve was shot and had been since birth! Well, he said you need a valve and I got a valve.
The worst that happened to me post surgery was the constant back pain. I had my chest opened up, I don't know about you. My cardiologist tells me that the surgeons are going through the groin these days! Things started getting better as soon as I discovered that I needed to focus on my life, not my valve! Anxiety leads to depression and that my friend is a killer! I worked in pharma for 30 years and saw a lot of it.
I got off all my drugs asap. It is the responsibility of the patient to get off all drugs and it can be done in most cases. You must do this in concert with your doctor. When the doctor gets out his RX pad, it is time to say, "Hey, what else can I do besides take this synthetic drug? Or, how can I get off this product, what do I need to do? Take a good look at your diet and start eating right! I have changed my diet drastically since my surgery. Drink a lot of water everyday, Smartwater with electrolytes is great!
Today, I feel great, even when I am on the courts! I don't think about my valve, my heart, or 'whatifs'....Everything is positive! Good Luck!
