Hi Jovan.. I’m so glad your surgery will be soon. My surgery for exactly what you have is 4/9. I began having obvious symptoms in 11/23 which are getting more pronounced. So like you I am checking items off my list to be ready for surgery. We are so fortunate that we will soon have new valves. Wishing the best for you!

Hi Jovan , The metal / mechanical mitral valve is different for everyone . Mine can sometimes be heard in quiet places by some people , if they hear it it sounds like the steady tick of a clock which is quite amazing really . It works with my heart , so if my heart is slower or faster the steady tick does the same . It is a comforting sound and I feel very lucky to be alive . I was in a very bad way prior to surgery and this little valve doing it ‘s thing 24/7 every second of the day has been such a gift to me and to my family . Take care .

Hi Jovan , Welcome I had emergency open heart surgery over three years ago during covid times and I took my surgeons advice . I have a metal / mechanical mitral valve . I eat anything what I like and have lots of veg and salad . My INR is usually checked every 2-3 months . I am very happy to be alive after my life saving surgery . Only you and your surgeon can choose what is best or right for you . Take care and welcome to this lovely community .

Jovan Dumas Hi Ruth! Thank you for taking the time to respond. I have heard that the “click” sounds like 2 nickels coming together. I have been trying to determine how loud the click actually is. In you experience, is the click very loud?

Rita Savelis I have had 2 mechanical valves for 9 years. I don't really hear the clicking. It has to be very very very quiet in a room and occasionally I can then hear it. I used to put a pillow on my chest if I was on the sofa reading and it was very quiet. Honestly, it's the last thing I think about regarding mechanical valves. I was 53 when I had heart surgery and because my valve stenosis came from radiation I had as a teenager (cancer treatment) having a second operation was to be avoided if at all possible. Also with 2 valves, each one would would fail at a different time so there were more possibilities for re-operation with tissue valves. So, alas, I did not have a real choice but instead let my surgeon make a decision for me especially when he saw the state of my heart during the operation. You have more choices, and any choice is the right one for you. It is a decision that is hard for everyone, but every body is different and you can not know ahead of time how your body will respond. You will make the choice that is right for you at the time and then not look back. Take care.
Welcome to recovery
