Hi Karen! I’m actually doing good! I’m 8 weeks post surgery, still a little sore but feel like I can do almost all I did before surgery. I am like you, I found out about my severe aortic stenosis on October 2nd (I fainted which prompted the echo) and had surgery on November 9th. It was a whirlwind of emotions for my family and I during that month. I was extremely scared and nervous, but my surgeon and the team made me feel very comfortable. I’m not gonna lie the first couple days after surgery were hard but the pain meds help! I think the hardest thing for me at first was having to rely on someone for everything! I’m very independent but you have to rely on the nurses and care team to help you in the hospital. My family was very supportive which helps also. It gets a little lonely in the hospital, but take that time to rest and let your body heal. I had to rely on my family and their help when I went home. You’ll get tired easily but I listened to my body and when I was tired, I took a nap. Sleeping was the hardest for me because I normally sleep on my side I needed to sleep on my back and elevated. I have a wedge pillow and that helps. I think what helps the most is having a positive outlook on the process! I really didn’t have a choice, I had to have the surgery so I could go on with living. Everyday I felt a little better and a little stronger. I would say around 4 weeks I was able to do a little more for myself also. But if you have help, take it! My kids very much have babied me but that is because they were so worried but I’ll take it for all I’ve done for them, haha! You’re gonna get through this and you will feel better! I’m not out of breath when walking like I was before surgery. If you have any questions please ask! We have similar stories, I’m here to help if I can!

Delanee Durham You definitely have good and bad days during recovery. At 3 weeks I had a bout with afib, my heart was racing and my heart rate was jumping all over the place, that put me back in the hospital for a night to get my heart back into normal rhythm. Afib is normal after surgery but it usually happens while your still in the hospital. My cardiologist said he wasn’t concerned, but annoyed by it. Because of it I had to go on some anticoagulants and beta blockers, which I was trying to avoid, but I’m not in control of all of this. It was a little depressing but I have to still look in the bright side and be thankful to still have another day of life. It really is take it one day at a time. You will make it!
