Kate, I can tell you are smart and strong. Three years since my surgery and life will never be the same. My journey has been a hard one and I cannot find the person I use to be. Knowing that my hear issues have been resolved is comforting and I am grateful for that. But other parts of my life seem to have a continuous shadow that
does not lift. So I am also trying to embrace the new normal

Hi Kate, welcome back! I experienced many of the same emotions and feelings u battled with following my OHS for mitral valve regurgitation and afib. Had 2nd surgery for septum separation 6 months later. Thanks so much for sharing your story which has helped so many more deal with the postoperative emotional depression and mental trauma that the medical folks do not tell you about. I had thought I was alone until my husband and I were told by my primary care provider that this is often a side effect to the OHS. Took me two years to get back to the me I know even though I will never be the same person I was (which is ok). I am a retired RN and have decided to help our local rural community mental health needs by joining our hospital’s “patient and family advisory committee” . This has helped me too along with some antidepressants, ha. My docs know that I am always available to spend time with someone who is pre or post OHS. Also, I have tried to enlighten my own docs regarding need to listen to their patients postop healing complaints as it took me many months and a scan to convince them that there was something wrong with my “septum” healing and they just chalked it up to usual postop complaints. Finally took 2nd visit to my cardiologist that he finally ordered a scan that showed my septum had never fused back together and wires had completely penetrated the bone. Help me remind docs and patients who have had past radiation therapy to breasts or chest , or history of osteoporosis that plates and bands may need to be used instead of wires to reconnect the sternum halves during open heart surgery. Will close this long note and wish you continued positive experiences and healing with a bright future. Thanks, Jeany Clarke of North Dakota.

Thanks again and sorry for the super long delay in response, not on here much these days :)

Hi Kate, good to see you are doing better. I myself had biscuspid aortic valve replacement June 24, 2016. Was doing well until last fall Oct 2018. My heart was fluttering and we don't know why. Been to ER a few times. They just sent me home with a heart monitor for a month. And my cardiologist didn't say much. Said it was ok. Then 4 months past...it flutters again and more frequently. So tomorrow I'm going to the Cleveland clinic. Hope we get to the root of it. It's been making me anxious. I know I need to calm down. Everyone tells me so. So I guess it's a journey that we all have to go thur. So wish me luck.

Petey Bello Hi Kate, glad to hear you are finally feeling yourself! You had a lot of work done to your heart. It's amazing what these surgeons can do for us today. I have found that even though our doctors tell us by the first year we should feel fully recovered, it doesn't always work out that way. I was fortunate to have my mitral valve repaired, but since I had gotten so sick after the surgery it did take time for me to feel myself again. I recently have gotten really bad muscle spasms in the front and back right quadrant where my incisions and scars from all the tubes, surgery and wires were. I'm thinking its from scar tissue or the healing process. My scar did keloid pretty badly, so I still get pain jabs in the incision area. I am doing very well and feel so fortunate! Thank you for asking ...I do need hip surgery next, I was hit by a car as a child & it's caught up to me. I'm not in a rush to go under the knife again. I'm taking my time getting several opinions. I worry about blood clotting since we have the blood clotting gene in my family :(
Always good to hear from you and I hope you have continued success in your recovery process!

Kate Watson Yes, they don't exactly prepare you for how long it may actually take. And seems especially with minimally invasive procedures, they make it out like it's an easy procedure and recovery! I know that was not the case for you or others on here. Sorry to hear you need hip surgery too. I hope you can put it off a while longer and find the best surgeon. So, I was having terrible stabbing pains and itching in my scar, which was also keloided, and I went to a dermatologist who injected it with cortisone. I can't lie, it hurt like heck to get the injections, but within a few days it started feeling so much better! The stabbing pain and burning has nearly gone away, and the scar has softened a lot. Anyway, just wanted to tell you in case you want to look into it. Always nice to hear from you too!

Hi Kate! I'm responding here because I just saw your response on my page and I wanted to make sure you saw my response to your response!
To answer your question, I have had a ton of anxiety about my heart rate being so high! It has been exacerbated by the nurses in cardiac rehab. I tried to go into work a half a dozen times within the past couple weeks just to check in because I'm not back yet and having Cardiac Rehab after those times my heart rate was extremely elevated. Mind you, my work environment is a loud, fast pace, very busy, highly stimulating gym environment. I work in high-pressure sales and just being around that environment was really stressful for me the few times I went in. The nurses at rehab were really concerned about that and not even wanting to work with me on those days because my heart rate was starting to high. That gave me even more anxiety because I need to get back to work! My doctor prescribed me some anxiety medication which helps with my anxiety… Not sure about my heart rate yet but at least I'm not full of anxiety like I was. The upper management at my job knows my concerns now so they are working on something for me but I won't know yet until later this week. I'm hoping for a less stressful position possibly… Crossing my fingers. They have been so supportive through all this and I've been there a long time so I'm hoping and praying on this issue! I am on my two month mark now with recovery and still can't believe I went through that let alone made it through that! I think all of us are heroes for being able to go through that trauma and survive it and deal with everything afterwards we are dealing with! I am trying to up my exercise and just got cleared by my cardiologist for a higher heart rate during exercise so that's actually making me feel better and more human again. I also got cleared to start lifting weights again as long as I listen to my body I can lift more than the 2 pounds they are keeping me at at Cardiac Rehab LOL! For me that's a big part of my life that's been missing for eight weeks so I know once I get back into my weight training it will make a big difference in how I feel mentally and physically. Although right now I'm having a lot of shoulder issues on the right side. How did you handle any shoulder discomfort? Did you have any? Everything for me is on my right side. Thank you so much for checking in on me and keep me posted. I can't wait till I'm at the five month mark!

Kate Watson I'm glad to hear that your employer is supportive! Hopefully they will come up with a plan that works well for you to transition. How high does your HR get during exercise? Has it got even higher after stopping the beta blocker?
I stopped going to cardiac rehab after only going for 3 weeks or so. I had that rib injury and they were concerned about making it worse so I did PT for a while plus did my own exercising. I much prefer exercising outside to walking on a treadmill inside, which is all I was doing there. I didn't feel that program was designed for people who are normally active, it was all elderly people there. It was very boring to me and I made much more progress on my own. But it helped initially because I had so much anxiety about having afib and a high heart rate, so it was good to be monitored for those few weeks while exercising and gave me peace of mind that it was normal. But I can see why your anxiety would worsen if the nurses weren't even letting you exercise! It's great that you got cleared to exercise again on your own then- anything to help you feel more human and more like yourself. Believe it or not, I still have trouble with my left shoulder after all these months. I have been getting regular massage and stretching that area daily with door stretches, but it still flares up. It is crazy how we get through what we do. It doesn't even seem real to me now that that all could have happened to me. It's been 5 months but feels like forever ago in some ways. You have had a rough journey too and I hope it just keeps getting better from here on out. Yes we are all heroes and stronger than we believe we are! Keep in touch :)

Amy Dorsey I feel like we have been through the exact same thing even though we had different procedures done. I felt the same about Cardiac Rehab. I had a lot of anxiety so I felt like I needed it, but now at this point I feel like it's too slow for me and quite boring. I'm not sure how Cardiac Rehab programs work but where I am, they make you commit to 18 sessions minimum out of 36 total. I have three more weeks to go before hitting minimum and then I'm going to be done there. My exercise heart rate is back to where it was pre-surgery. I can go up to 160 which is great. But I just got approved by my cardiologist for that and at rehab they weren't letting me get higher than 130 most days which did nothing for me. So after three weeks there I finally feel like I'm actually doing something in there. But I can do the same thing myself at my gym. I'm not sure how long it's going to take my heart rate to get under 100 and stay there but I hope it happens. right now it feels like it's never going to happen. I do believe about your shoulder! Being in the fitness industry for so long I have learned that any type of shoulder issue can be a very long long process to rehabilitate. I'm afraid I'm going to have the same issue trying to get mine fixed. Yes, the journey was very rough and I'm finally feeling like myself again. I can't even believe what I have been through these past two months either. It's just amazing to me still. And funny how most people don't understand. Some people have treated me like I should've been better weeks ago, and others treat me like I'm deathly ill and can't do anything by myself… It's like one extreme to the other with everyone!

Kate Watson Haha yeah I know exactly what you mean. People just don't know what to expect after someone has had heart surgery. They either treat me like I'm frail and sickly or like it was no big deal. And I hear you about the heart rate issues too. Just today I found myself wondering if my HR will ever go back to my pre-surgery rate. I am still working with the metoprolol and can only take the full dose if my BP is normal enough. Most days I can only take 1/2 tab. The lowest my HR has gotten to was around 80, still high but much more comfortable to me with the mechanical valves. My doctor did say it can be a year or so before the heart rate comes down on its own. ugh that's a long time.
I didn't have to commit to any amount of cardiac rehab myself so that's why I never returned. I am trying to get back to some regular exercise program now though besides walking. I have been doing manual labor around the house, like lifting light boxes and painting because we recently bought a house. I can actually see some muscle tone coming back in my arms from it! Too bad you don't live close so you could be my personal trainer since you know Exactly what I've been through! My hubby and I are going to Belize in January for a much needed vacation and I hope to be in decent shape by then, (not that I was ever in the kind of shape you were). I would just like to start feeling strong again! This surgery has really kicked my ass and weakened my body and spirit, I'm only now starting to slowly rebound from it.

Kate Watson Hi Bob, honestly I think Dr Barnhart and the whole team there were outstanding. In comparing it to my first surgery which was done at a hospital in PA 11 years ago, it was like night and day difference. Communication with his staff before, during and after the surgery were excellent. They let me and my husband know what to expect every step of the way. Dr Barnhart is also just a really caring person, is so knowledgeable and well respected by his colleagues. My surgery ended up being more complicated than expected, and I was really glad I went to him ultimately because knew how to handle it. My ICU nurses at Swedish were stellar. My only complaint is once I got out of ICU onto a floor, the nursing staff rotated a lot and they kept changing nurses on me, saying it was because they were short staffed. So that part was pretty frustrating for consistency sake, but I understand that is a problem in hospitals all over the place. I think I wish I went to Cleveland Clinic when I had my first surgery because I wonder if my mitral valve could have been repaired back then. The damage was too bad now though to even entertain it. So to answer your question, no I don't have regrets in going to him and I highly recommend Dr Barnhart! When are you expecting to need surgery?

Bob Fessler Hi Kate! Thanks for responding to me. I honestly don't know when I will need surgery. I have a valve opening of 0.79 and a gradient of 41 so I'm classified as having severe stenosis. My heart is not enlarged and I'm not feeling any symptoms that I know about. My cardiologist said to expect surgery within a year and that was last January. I see him again later this year. I believe that the longer I can put it off the better as new surgical techniques, procedures and equipment are constantly being developed. So I'll be a patient patient.
I'm really thankful to read what you wrote about Dr. Barnhart and Swedish Hospital. I had already mostly decided that Dr. Barnhart and Swedish had the experience and facilities to take care of my AVR. But your note confirms that and so I'm going to cross that off my list. One less thing to worry about. Thank you sooooo much!!!!

Hi Kate! Thanks for all your sweet posts on my threads. How are you feeling? In response to your question about the beta blocker...they told me it was to help my heart rate go down and that I'd probably be on it up to 6 months. My Cardiologist wants me off it ASAP because he thinks it's causing all of the dizziness and blackouts and keeping my blood pressure too low. I'm not exactly sure why I was put on one when I have such low blood pressure already. When I was in the hospital they kept me in ICU longer because my blood pressure was so low we couldn't get it out of the 50s. Now I am in the low 80's over low 60's. I'm hoping I feel better off the beta blocker. My PCP had also mentioned it's probably causing some negative issues. I've started weaning to half dosage and noticed right away my BP go back up. Who knew?!?

Enrique K Hi Kate, great to hear from you as well. How did you hurt your rib? How is the clicking of the valves and your Coumadin levels? I never attended cardiac rehab the surgeon and cardiologist didn't recommended it since I was very fit at the time of surgery. I have heard very good things though of various members of this forum. It's very good to walk try to do it for 30 minutes 4 times a week if you can don't over do it. Having a dog makes you get out of bed and exercise for sure. My kids want a dog so we are thinking of getting one (labradoodle)vwhen school starts. I'm doing really well these days with lots of energy and no issues. Kate Watson Hey Enrique, sorry I just saw this. I have some troubles navigating this site at times. I don't know how i hurt my rib- I'm still not sure if it's just how things are healing and coming back together post surgery or if I just pulled it somehow. I am finally starting to feel better in that regard though! I go to PT twice a week and think it's helping now. My valve clicking is still bothersome to me, mostly at night or during exercise. My doctor started me on a new med which will bring my heart rate down and should make my valves less noisy hopefully. My coumadin levels have been stable for the last month! I continue to eat my greens and I have a few drinks a week. I love Moscow Mules too :) Yes, having a dog has been a blessing for forcing me out of the house to walk daily. Hey Kate!! It is nice, as nice as can be, under the circumstances to find another double valve patient in our demographic. I am nearly 3 years since my second surgery. After awhile, you should get used to the clicking sound. I don't even notice it anymore.
Warmly,
Ryan

Kate Watson Hi Ryan! Thanks for writing. I know what you mean- I'm glad to find others in our situation because it is less common and I feel so alone in this sometimes. My recovery process is much slower than others it seems. The sound still very much bothers me, as does the feel of my heart pounding. It's very loud and others around me can hear it :) I watched your youtube video though, pretty cool. And it looks like you're living an active lifestyle, can't wait til I have a normal, active life again!

Hi Kate, How are you feeling these days? I hope better! I started cardiac rehab this past week & so far so good... I counted all my incisions 'large & small' (including the wire & tube access points) & there were 18 in all ...I feel I have definitely turned in a positive direction in my healing process. My energy level has been really good, days of exhaustion are getting less. I hope you are finally able to walk you dog! My dog will get her stitches out on Monday! (They are driving her crazy - poor thing) ....
God Bless & keeping you my prayers :)

Kate Watson Hi Petey, thanks for your message. I'm so glad to hear that you are turning a corner! Did your dog's surgery go ok then? I am doing ok but seem to have a new pain issue each week, this week is major rib pain and my incision still hurts bad when I move positions. Cardiac rehab is going slowly for me for these reasons so I'm a bit frustrated with my progress at this point. I will get there eventually. Keep up the good work! And thanks again for checking in:-)

Petey Bello Kate, I'm sorry you are still having pain issues. Pain does tend to hold us back a bit so I hope yours goes away soon. I think they take us slow in rehab in the beginning until they see how our hearts & bodies handle it.
I'm hoping my dogs surgery will end up being successful. The surgery went well, we just have to see if her scare tissue holds & she can build up the muscle & strength in her leg once her stitches are removed (which will be Monday!). I think the stitches bother her so she still favors her leg. I hope you are able to walk your dog & enjoy that special time with him!
Good luck to you, I hope you find some relief soon!

Kate Watson Thanks Petey! I hope you and your dog continue to heal well together. I have been going on walks with my dog and whoever walks her, but the dr didn't want me to hold her leash yet until this next week. I admit I'm worried now to take over with this latest rib issue. But one day at a time!
Petey Bello Thx & Good luck Kate! It is best to take one day at a time ...It does get us where we need to go!

Hope you are doing better. I had to have my mitral valve replaced in 1991 because of silent rheumatic fever that we determined happened in 1975. I have a St. Jude mechanical valve and I have been on coumadin all of these years. The blood testing is the worse part and watching how much green food you consume. I think you are going to start feeling better and better. It really takes six months to a year to start feeling like you are really recovered from the valve replacement, but you will feel better.
I will try to check back on you and see how you are. You are in my prayers.

Kate Watson Thanks so much for the message! I remember from my first surgery that it did take a good 6 months to a year to feel really better, so I'm trying hard to be patient with myself. The coumadin is an adjustment but my INR is getting closer to stable. Someday I won't have to get the blood tests every week, which I look forward to. Thanks again for writing and for the prayers.

Kate Watson Hi Petey, I am feeling better than I was a few days ago. My pain is a lot better after getting a massage yesterday. And my heart rate has come down a bit so it feels less uncomfortable to me. Thank you for asking! How are you doing in your recovery process? How is your pain at this point? I hope some normalcy is returning for you. Thanks for your message and prayers :-)

Petey Bello Hi Kate, glad you are feeling better after your massage & your heart rate has come down a bit. I'm sure you are relieved! How do you get a massage? I can't lay on my stomach yet. I thought about looking up someone who can do a therapeutic massage for after surgery. Each day gets a little better but I still really struggle some days. I am doing my walks but get tired easily. (Plus I now have the poison ivy to tend to). I am very thankful to have had a successful surgery & be on the recovery side at this point. I just didn't expect it to be this hard. I am also afraid once I go off my meds that my heart rate or blood pressure might go up. I had a irregular heart beat right after surgery too. It's all part of the healing process. You & Barbara Laurie are such an inspiration to me. You have both been through so much, I pray for you both to feel better soon!

Kate Watson As for the massage, since I also can't lay on my stomach or drive, I looked for someone who could come to me. I also needed to be sure they understood my physical limitations so we talked on the phone about what those were. We decided we were going to do part in the chair if needed. But I was actually able to do it on the table by laying on either side with a body pillow and on my back while holding my heart pillow. My husband was actually here to help me get set up on the table initially. Moving positions throughout it was painful, I admit but overall it benefited me. I had two massages now since surgery, and it really helped ease the widespread muscle tension I have had.
The recovery process is a hard one for sure and pretty different for each of us. There are people who astound me with how quickly they rebound but that's not been my experience. I forget if you had minimally invasive or open? Has the nausea gone away completely? I still have it sometimes but nothing like it was for me in the hospital. I really felt for you when you were dealing with that because I know how miserable and all consuming it is. I'm sorry about the poison ivy though it will make for a funny story later on! But for now it must be awful. Thanks for your sweet words. I hope every day continues to get better and better for you!

Petey Bello Thanks Kate for explaining the massage. I might try to find someone, I really think it will help. I had the mitral repair through a mini-thoracotomy. But since the repair was difficult & where they had to enter, I ended up with a 5" incision above my right breast up on my chest that ends in the middle of my chest. The pain had been more then I expected, I heard since they cut through your nerves, muscles etc it can be more painful at first but a shorter healing time (& I stopped taking pain meds the first week due to the sickness). I actually had more pain from where all the tubes went. The whole right quadrant of my shoulder area from front to back hurt for a while. I was really sick for the first two weeks from all the meds & loosing so much weight. Which made me weaker & I still get exhausted easily. I am very active & keep in good shape normally so this was a surprise for me. I expected to be up & about sooner. My neighbor in the room with me at the hospital had a mini-sternotomy & said my incision was a long as hers, so I guess it depends on what the surgeon needs to do for each one of us. I'm very thankful, some days can just be harder then others. At this point, I am getting stronger each day! It has def been a journey, I fell out of bed the first few days home, tripping over my dogs bed & now the poison ivy...so I know I will look back & have a good laugh! At least I am sleeping better each night & putting on a few pounds which is giving me more strength each day! I hope you continue to get stronger & feel better with each day!

Petey Bello I also think there is a misconception about OHS. It's all OHS, just a difference in how they enter the heart whether it be via: Sternotomy, Mini-Sternotomy, Mini-thoracotomy, etc. I think that was my biggest shock. The drs & everything you read underplay the surgery & incisions by stating that its 'Minimally invasion', when there are pros & cons to each one. By cutting through your nerves, muscles etc. the mini-thoracotomy is more painful, but the Sternotomy is a bigger deal as far as the length of the incision & longer healing time, etc, etc. The rest of the operation remains the same: opening the heart, shutting the body down etc...Of course I'm not underplaying a valve repair verses a valve replacement (especially two valves)...It's all relevant to the magnitude of OHS...Our bodies go through a lot & we each have a different reaction/journey...
That is the beauty of this site, we can hear everyones stories & know that we are not alone!

Kate Watson You are correct that there is a misconception about minimally invasive surgery. I dIdn't realize until I came on this site that any heart surgery is still heart surgery and a big trauma to the body no matter how it's done. It really is still quite invasive!
I went through the same thing with the nausea and weight loss. I haven't actually been able to gain the weight back which shocks me because I'm eating every few hours now that my appetite returned. I'm a dietitian so I feel I know what to do but clearly the body uses a lot of calories just trying to heal. So I have try to make some adjustments. I am also used to being active so I look forward to being able to get back to my old activities and getting strong again!
I see in your picture you have a dog. Are you able to walk your dog at this point? They told me to wait to closer to 12 weeks to make sure my sternum is healed, which is because I have a big dog (greyhound) who pulls a lot. But I can't imagine how we'd get by that long. We've had dog walkers thus far but it's getting quite expensive and my poor doggie seems to be sad.
So many things I am eager to return to. I look forward to the days when this is all just a distant memory!

Petey Bello Hi Kate, I hope you're feeling better & getting stronger! I have to eat every couple hours too. I'm amazed how many calories I need through this healing process. My husband has been walking my dog on our walks. My dog had surgery a few weeks before I did. She tore her crucial ligament & miniscus. So she needs the rehab too. Her surgery didn't turn out that well. 3% of dogs have a problem with the material they use to hold the leg together. It causes them pain. So my dog has been on pain meds & has to go back for a 2nd surgery on June 6th to take out the material that's causing her pain. Hopefully her scar tissue will be strong enough. She doesn't pull on the leash so I am going to try walking her myself since I'm getting stronger. With the thoracotomy I can use my left arm/hand. (Just not my right). It is harder for you with the sternum. Your pup is probably wondering why his mom can't walk or play with him😞 thankfully you were able to find someone to walk him!
I've been having problems with some of my breathing. I had to get a CAT scan w/contrast today just to rule out blood clots. I will find out tomorrow. Since they didn't keep me, I'm hoping that's a good sign. I go for my echocardiogram on Friday! I think I will be more at ease once I know my heart valve is working they way it should! I guess we all go through that worry just after surgery.
I wish you a quick recovery so you can get back to your activies & walking your dog! I know how much that means to you having a dog of my own! They are our special buddies that bring us so much joy!

Petey Bello So my CT Scan showed I'm clear of blood clots, but I do have an infection in my lungs. They are giving me an antibiotic to help clear it up. I woke up today with a sore throat & cold, I guess from the infection. Friday I go for my echo! Praying all is good with my valve!
Hope you are doing better each day!

Kate Watson Yikes, I'm glad to hear your CT was ok but sorry about the lung infection! What were your symptoms with the breathing? I still feel like I can't breathe when I lay flat or go up any inclines. And I had a dry cough at night but I had an echo last week and it was normal. Hope everything goes well with yours, I'm sure it will! Definitely helps to get that confirmation that all is well with the new valve.
Your poor doggie! That would be very hard on me if mine had health issues at the same time as me. I hope you both continue to get stronger each day and that she does well with her surgery.
Keep us posted on the echo!
Petey Bello Thx Kate, I do feel bad for my dog. She is such a good patient too!
Petey Bello Thx Kate, I do feel bad for my dog. She is such a good patient too!
As far as my symptoms. I could use my spirometer & do my deep breathing but with my regular breathing, I was always trying to get a normal breath. Like I was not getting enough air. I would yawn all the time trying to catch my breath. I though maybe I was getting asthma. My EKG was also normal along with all my vitals. Thankfully my dr wanted to rule out blood clots so she sent me for the CT scan w/contrast. Also at night I wasn't as bad while sleeping.
Maybe you should ask your dr again. My dr said a CT scan will show a clear picture if anything is wrong. Good luck - I would get checked out to ease your mind & know if anything is going on!
