My sister had her mitral replaced and tricuspid repaired 2 months ago. She had occasional ocular migraines before surgery and had them every day shortly after surgery and once a week now. I had my mitral repaired 9 days ago. I’ve had a couple flare ups but nothing major.

Thomas Brusstar I also have noticed an increase in ocular migraines since my mitral valve repair. I was hoping it was the thinners, but I've been off those for a months and I still have them. Before surgery, I would have them a couple times a year; now it's maybe once a week. It doesn't cause headache, just the visual disturbance. I'm still hoping it starts to go away.

Dan Vechiola I have been getting them also about once a week. Visual auras that go away in about 15 minutes without a headache with Tylenol. I was wondering if its the Metroprolol. Are you on blood pressure meds? Metroprolol?l
Rosie Craig Dan, yes, I am on Metroprol. I was on Lisinopril for years but Metroprolol since my surgery.

Valerie Herndon-Vitarella I occasionally have mild visual disturbances that seem to be from the Metoprolol, but may just be from the surgery. I had them after my first surgery while I was on it and once I stopped taking it, they went away. Now, after my second surgery, I have had some again and I am back on the Metoprolol. I see like a curved line with small triangles attached on it that is light and it goes away within about 10 minutes. It did happen more frequently closer to my surgery. I am 6 months out and it happens only once every week or two now.

Hi Rosie, I too have had ocular migraines occasionally before surgery and after. My aortic valve was replaced Nov 1, 2018 - just a few weeks ago. I have had 2 more ocular migraines while an OT and PT visited on 2 separate occasions. They went away each time after visit. In my case, I am thinking it is stress that causes them. I'll check with all my medical team and see if I can find an answer for you. Pre surgery, I had my eyes checked by an optometrist and he said the migraines caused no damage and to close my eyes for 10 to 15 minutes when it happened. I am very fortunate that works to stop them. I'll let you know if I find out anything that might help you.

Rosie Craig Thanks Patricia, mine only last about 20 minutes. Some impair my vision more than others. I have even had them during the night or when I first wake up, before I am even out of bed. I document the day and time for each one and there’s no pattern. I used to keep track of what I ate, but also found no connection. It’s just frustrating to never know when they will occur. I’ve gotten so I don’t even tell my husband because I’m afraid he’ll think I’m looking for attention, though that’s really not his nature to not believe me. I was just hoping they would subside after six months, but they seem to be increasing. 😬

Hi Rosie! January 9, 2019 is my 2 year anniversary of my surgery to replace my aortic valve. Since the moment I came out of sedation in the recovery room I have had the ocular migraines at least once a week, every week. At times they are a daily occurrence. I have mentioned this to my cardiologist and my general practitioner and not gotten any help. They have both said they had not heard of this from other patients. Guess all I can do is tolerate them.

Rosie Craig Mike, mine started right after my angiogram. Continued while I was still intubated in recovery and twice during the night when I had afib. Funny, the doctors say they haven’t heard of this but I sure am reading about a lot of people who are experiencing them. My cardiologist didn’t seem to think it is anything, but my primary physician is pursuing it. I read that the heart-lung machine can cause problems with vision but there’s not much information out there. I’ll let you know if my MRI, MRA, Retinal Specialist or Neurologist find anything. Hopefully we’ll have an answer one way or the other by the end of a December. In the meantime, I’m with you..all we can do is tolerate them.

Rosie Craig Thanks Anita! I live in Sun City West. We moved here last year so this is our second summer here. It seems a bit more humid this year, but I’m from Minnesota so am used to it....just not 114 degree temps. I am starting my 8th week of rehab and it’s going well. I think we might have the high BP thing under control now, except it goes quite low at times. I know time is my friend and I just need to be patient. I am very pleased with my doctors down here and that helps.

Hi Rosie,
I had the ocular migraines monthly for about 20 years leading up to my surgery. The year prior to surgery they seemed to subside, but came back after surgery on a weekly basis. After about 6 months they decreased, and now ( 4 years later) they occur less than once a month. Mine are mostly triggered by bright flashes of light (like off a windshield on a sunny day). I can make them go away with a glass of water, a cup of coffee (or some chocolate) and closing my eyes for 15 minutes. I hope you're recovering well, and that your migraines lessen considerably!

Rosie Craig Thank you Meredith! Mine are also triggered by bright light. We recently moved to AZ where the sun shines brightly almost every day. I will try the glass of water or cup of coffee method and see if that works. Thanks again for the information.

Diane T I noticed that I'd get ocular migraines when I was overdoing it. It became my signal to slow down. I'm 6 months post-op and get them rarely now (pre-surgery I'd get an ocular migraine once every couple of years -- the headache kind I would get every few months -- I haven't had any of those post-op)

Rosie Craig Thanks Diane! Yesterday I had one when I first got up. I am now taking Meredith’s advice and during water when I first get up. Dehydration might be an issue because it’s so dry here and I don’t drink any in the evening so I don’t get up so much during the night. Hopefully that’s my answer.
