TWO YEARS!! Two years out from my surgical aortic valve replacement I am happy to report I am going strong. Back to being very active...hiking, swimming, biking, skiing. I've had two more years for all of that, two more years to enjoy my husband, children and grandchildren, two more years to start to really enjoy retirement and begin to work on my bucket list. Just had my (now just annual) followup with my cardiologist and all is well. I feel very blessed and try to enjoy each day to the fullest. If you are still in the early stages of getting through this, take heart. This will be you one day soon!

Katheryn Applegate Wow! It has been a while since I've been here! Still going strong, now 3 years out! For Mohammed, I was 66 years old when my aortic valve was replaced. I had a bovine tissue valve replacement. 80 mg aspirin is my only heart related "med". Very grateful for the outcome!

Rose Madura Beautiful picture. And congratulations on such a long hike! We love the Smokies but have quit hiking there. Last September, our nephew was attacked and killed by a black bear. Only the second time this has happened in the National park. He was hiking on the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies. So we are still antsy about it. Granted it happened deep in the mountains but we are still afraid to take any chances. Just be careful out there!

Martin Smith Great to read here of your impressive progress, Katheryn. I had my Ross procedure done a few days after your operation and , like you, hiking has been a big part of my recovery. The Appalachian Trail looks really appealing.

Katheryn Applegate Omg Rose Madura,
I am so sorry to hear about your nephew! That is horrifying and would keep me away too! They have been limiting backcountry camping due to bear activity. We never saw any but we’re in pretty well traveled areas. I know a bear had to be shot after it attacked someone this year. Scary!

Katheryn Applegate Happy heart valve day! I had a surgical heart valve replacement Sept.21 after being rescheduled from July due to a Covid surge. Unfortunately I had a setback in the form of a post op stroke on Oct. 4. Thanks to great care in the hospital, from my family and cardiac rehab, I have recovered completely and just achieved my rehab goal of getting back to downhill and cross country skiing. Recently I’ve been able to do both these things and have had both Covid vaccines. Hoping for a better 2021!
