Just got discharged last Thurs, after mitral valve replacement with medtronic mech valve. Last INR is 1.14. Im currently taking 2.5mg coumadin. Any advised to make it to 2.5-3.5 range. I worry that I might clot before my ff up appointment next week. Or is it just normal to have a low INR if you are just starting you coumadin? Tnx😍

Susan Lynn Angelica - It's advisable to eat the diet you can live with, and let your medical team calibrate your dosage. Your doctor may have some ideas in the interim, but you will want to keep your diet pretty steady once you get in the range. I was surprised how sensitive my INR was when I was taking blood thinners. Consistency is important.
Glad you're home. Wishing you a speedy recovery. ❤

Mike Roskowinski Hey Angelica. I am on warfarin for mine so I get your concern. I don’t think that you will need to worry about a clot that fast. Mine is at 1.8 right now and they want it between 2-3. I was sent home with 2mg tablets but they have had me taking 2 a day to see if I can get in the range. Sometimes other medications can also mess with your INR levels. Have you met with an INR nurse yet? I am doing weekly blood checks right now till they can get me at the correct number. I think maybe you should increase your dosage for now till you get to the proper level. Also it is important to eat your normal diet so they can help it adjust. Vitamin K is one that you need to avoid cause that clots your blood so green leafy vegetables. Good luck with getting it to the right level and don’t worry you shouldn’t clot that fast. They would not have let you leave the hospital if that was going to be a problem.

Meredith Bray I would say follow your nurse's advice, and if you have any questions to call the cardiologist or surgeon's office and speak with them.I have a mechanical aortic valve, and for 6 months after surgery I was advised to keep my INR between 2.5-3.5. My levels didn't settle and get consistently in-range for about 6 weeks.
My therapeutic range has since been lowered - for which I am grateful, because it allows me more flexibility. I have spent a lot of time talking to nurses and cardiologists and surgeons about INR, and I recommend that if you have any questions that you contact your most trusted health professional.

Rita Savelis It can take some time to get yr INR numbers up. But meds are increased very slowly. At some point you'll reach your target but it may take time and INR will always go up and down even when you find your optimal dose. This is okay. Do not worry about clots! I wish someone had told me it can take weeks/months to stabilise and to get yr INR up. This is all normal as yr body adjusts. I have 2 mechanical valves and a high target INR. I take 8 mg 3 days and 10mg for 1 day. It's been 4 yrs now..

Angelica Vecta-Orbino Thank you guys. I was given 2 days to be on 5mg coumadin then 2.5mg started last night. Will have blood test on June 6th to check. Now I know that its normal for my INR to be adjusting at this early stage of recovery. Would really like to have that home testing here in the Philippines. I dont know if Roche Philippines is available here.
I'm really nervous to undergo mitral valve replacement. Being a nurse, I tend to overthink and worry when there still nothing to worry about.. haha! wish all is well with you guys.. (",)
