It's been nearly a month since my open heart surgery for aortic valve replacement and a RCA bypass on 9/9/22, and I'm recovering at home. Still dealing with swelling in the leg used to borrow a vein, taking LASIX. Had a couple follow-up visits this week, seems to be going well. Can't complain, but if I did I'd say I'm tired of sleeping in my recliner and avoiding using my arms for pushing, pulling, and lifting anything over five pounds. You know the drill. Right now my chest wound is "weeping" and I'm watching that it doesn't open up. I'm keeping it dressed. Feeling stronger, and taking a couple walks a day, about a mile each.

Greg Lewis Bob! What can i say! A couple miles a day?? WOW! You are doing sooo good!! Dont worry about the leg too much. My swelling went down, i think it was after my heart got doing better. It took some time. Dont get impatient with the lifting and pulling, though. I had to pretty much rebuild all my muscles, and a piece of advice is take it nice and slow. " if you hurt a muscle, you are the one that has to deal with it, while it takes 3 times as long to heal" that goes for the walking too! I kept trying to add more and more distance. And then it happened. The groin muscles gave out! I think they are finally getting better..months, and months later! So take it cool, you got nothing but time!! let your doc know if something is not right. Good luck with each day!!

Deena Z Hi Bob, it's bit of a surreal experience, isn't it? I always think of it as the "miracle surgery". What counts right now is that your surgery was successful and your recovery sounds like it is going great. In a couple of more weeks, you will be able to do even more. But yeah, the whole not being able to use arms and laying in one position has it's moments, even though you know it is short-termed.

Bob Rini Thanks, all of you. Adam, I'm starting my program for rehabilitation with a GPS watch to keep track of my activities and link to my MOVN app on my phone--and to my trainer at the hospital. Greg, I'm still pushing the walks, but trying not to jump the gun. I don't want to feel overconfident and screw it all up. Ha ha. Deena, you're right. It's definitely surreal, After five weeks, I feel like I'm just coming out of a brain fog. Some pain in my chest, but the harvested leg is better. Still swollen, but better.

I had Open Heart Surgery for an aortic valve replacement, and a bypass with a CABG procedure in my leg. Surgery two weeks back, 9/9/22. My question is regarding swelling in my leg where they took some veins for the bypass. If you had this CABG procedure, did you have a lot of swelling for long? I'm now using compression socks and trying to elevate my legs above heart level whenever possible, but my right leg is pretty swollen.

"Take another little piece of my heart, now baby.” Janis Joplin
So
a week out from Open Heart Surgery, it looks like you’ve been in a car
wreck. Body battered, holes from drainage tubes are healing but you’ve
got great plum-colored bruises, and of course the King Hell scar
presiding over all, the ten-inch zipper in the middle of the chest, but you're so happy you made it through and can busy recovering.
You
just want to sleep, but healing requires
movement, and your task now is avoiding blood clots and pneumonia, so you take walks. Little by little, you walk further. Around the ward, around the block, finally all the way to the park and back.
You've
become religious about exercising and taking walks and working with
your incentive spirometer to expand your lungs, which were on the
Heart-Lung Machine.
You can do this. You've already cleared the initial hurdle. You’ve survived Open Heart Bypass Surgery.

“I’m alive!” That’s the first thought I had surfacing from total anesthesia after open heart surgery yesterday. Today, miraculously, I’m sitting up in the ICU, groggy and trying to smile while draining into a thousand tubes but feeling lucky, so lucky. A long way to go, with drugs and a regimen of exercises already from the Physical Therapist, and plenty of rules (no lifting anything, no using hands or elbows to rise from the bed or chair since my breastbone is wired together, but I'm confident I can do this.

Rose Madura Interesting. I remember my first thought when I finally woke up was "we'll, I made it." But the odds are so much in our favor and we still tend to think that way. Anyhow, glad all is well with you and welcome to recovery.

Hello, friends! I just had Open Heart Surgery (09/09/22) to replace an aortic valve and bypass a clogged Right Coronary Artery with a CABG procedure. After five days in the hospital, I'm now recovering at home.

Bob Rini Thanks, everybody! I'm at home finally, after 6 days in the hospital, ICU and the regular ward. Now my recovery continues at home. Restricted in use of my upper body, my excercise is walking. I started on the hospital ward, tentatively circling the floor. Then, at home, I managed to circle the block. Finally, I'm walking blocks and blocks, improving every day. I'm also practicing my "incetive spirometer" and building my lung capacity. You want to re-learn to breathe deeply to avoid pneumonia, etc, and this improves rapidly. There is hope in recovery. You can do this.
Rose Madura You are doing all the right things Bob. Keep it up! Glad all is well.
