jo chaffey Hi Mohammed, I was only 16 when I had open heart surgery to repair my Pulmonary valve which was closing (I was born with this condition) I was in hospital for a total of three weeks, part of which I was in intensive care for about three days I think, I don't have much memory of that time because I was sleeping a lot. When I came out of intensive care there was no stopping me and I recovered very quickly. Even having my Sternam cut did not seem to hurt that much. I am now 68 and my poor valve is beginning to deteriorate. But looking on the bright side, it lasted a long time and I was fit and healthy for that time. If you are having surgery, good luck to you. I hope your recovery is as good as mine was. Jo

Hi Bob I just found this community today and was looking around and saw your story. My father has moderate to severe Aortic Stenosis and some blocked artery and they are recommending open heart surgery. It's comforting to see you are doing well and recovery. Any insights to offer as our family prepares to support my dad through this surgery? Thank you

Bob Rini Yes, thanks! I feel much better--and will live longer--so it's a win win. I know you're father will be better off getting the surgery--even though it sounds scary. Anticipation is worse than the procedure, which they perform all the time. It;s worth it! Good luck to your dad!

Bob Rini As far as family support, in recovery your father will be restricted in movement -- no pushing, pulling, or lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds--and no driving--so he will need assistance, and someone with him 24/7 for the first couple weeks at least. We were lucky and got a recliner chair. That makes it easier to get out of (without using my hands) and I even sleep in it, since you can only sleep on your back while your chest heals. Your dad will need patience, and he'll have to get up and walk around to keep the blood flowing and the body healing. Showering may require a plastic stool in the shower so he can sit and clean. Basically, everyone needs to work together. You can do this.
