Good morning everyone. My name is Cynthia and I live in Denver, CO. I've been diagnosed with an enlarged aortic root (5.2 centimeters) and surgery is being recommended. I meet with the surgeon today and frankly I'm feeling overwhelmed and somewhat frightened. Any positive success stories or encouragement/suggestions would be very much appreciated. I will keep you posted on what the doc tells me/suggests concerning the plan for repair. Thank you!

Catie B A warm welcome to you, Cynthia! For sure, the prospect of heart surgery is terrifying. I reminded myself many times of how highly skilled the surgeons are and that doing these procedures is their bread and butter-- daily fare. My surgery two years ago replaced my aortic valve and enlarged root and replaced part of my ascending aorta. Somehow learning that the root was "one more thing" needing to be addressed was upsetting and I asked one of the surgeons I consulted with, "Do you replace aortic roots very often?" He replied, "Oh, I did three of them last week."
I hope you'll find being here very encouraging. I wish you the best on your journey!

Take it one day at a time, and refer to this site often. I got a lot of comfort from this site. It was great seeing how many people have this same thing done every day and make it through. You can get through this!

Jean Jackson Hi Cynthia- I didn’t sleep a wink the night before my aortic valve replacement in Dec 2016. My husband almost had to force me to go to the hospital. The recovery wasn’t nearly so bad or painful as anticipated and I just made progress day by day, allowing myself to take the time to rest and heal. This site really is a wonderful resource for information and support!
I hope you'll find being here very encouraging. I wish you the best on your journey!
