Steve Farthing It is extremely common that during a visit to a primary care doc for whatever issues you may already have, the doc hears a heart murmur and suggests an echo which reveals a valve problem. Likewise with visits to other specialists for any reason, a heart murmur may be detected for the first time.

Elaine Yerby Thank you all for your comments. I am thankful that it's been found. As I live in a little island 9 miles by 5, I will have to fly to London to have the operation. I feel very much in limbo after the cardiologist said he feels it could fail within twelve months and then that he would see me for another echocardiogram in three - is it likely to fail all of a sudden or do you get symptoms for a while before it becomes dangerous? I feel there is no one I can ask as the real specialists are all in a different country!
