Hello Everyone! I am new to this community, but I was hoping for some guidance and support. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and I was just informed last week that I now have moderate-severe aortic valve stenosis with trace aortic valve regurgitation. My cardiologist told me that I will need to most likely have surgery within the year. Enter anxiety and fear! I knew this was a possibility, but I was hoping it was further down the road. I am 48 years old. My biggest concern is my 10 year old and a 14 year old. I am trying to stay positive, but the fear usually gets the best of me. I am so scared and feel very much alone because I haven't shared this news with others yet. I have been busy trying to research hospitals and doctors and the different options for procedures and it feels like a lot. I have my first appointment with a surgeon on Monday, 7/29 so right now my focus is to get questions written down that I want to ask. This surgeon is local and I don't think I am going to have the surgery here. I live in Vermont and I am looking at Mass. General and Brigham and Women's. Does anyone have experience at either of these hospitals? Any recommendations for surgeons for Aortic valve replacement? Any thoughts on questions I should be asking? I am sorry for such a long post and so many questions. I would really appreciate any help you could provide!! Thank you in advance!

Valerie Allen Hi Jessica, and Welcome! I had quite a bit of aortic work done 3 months ago. In your case, to me the most basic questions would be to confirm the aortic valve is the only issue: no related aortic aneurysm or aortic root issues that sometimes occur. The next question would be is there a possibility of aortic valve repair as opposed to replacement. These two questions would narrow down your search -maybe you already know answers. On the menu on the top right there is a SurgeonFinder you can search by name, place etc and filter by procedure. Many results have related reviews. Best of luck!

Jacquelyn Erndl Hi Jessica I also have a bicuspid aortic valve with aortic aneurysm also. I’m going to see a surgeon next Friday. Just wanted to say I understand the fear and anxiety you’re experiencing because I feel the same. I don’t know if you’d consider New York City for your surgery as there are excellent hospitals there. Mainly I just wanted to say you’re not alone and I’ve read a lot of positive testimonials so try to stay upbeat. We got this!!

Jessica Antonioli Thank you, Valerie, Jacquelyn, and Carmen for your kind words! It does help to know I am not alone. Thank you for the helpful tips as well. I do not know about any other issues with my heart at this time. I do know there can be due to the bicuspid. I am certainly not opposed to going to New York or anywhere else if it would be the best option. I will check out the surgeon finder and heart hospitals above! Thanks again for responding! We can do this!!

Daneen Douglas Ditto what Valerie said! Also, I would ask about biologic compared to mechanical. 3 months ago my bicuspid valve, root, and aorta were replaced. I chose a biologic valve that was fitted to make sure that when a replacement is needed in the future it will fit a TAVR. Who knows what technology there will be in 10 to 20 years? I just turned 53, BTW! I’ve just returned to work too!

Rose Madura Welcome Jessica. I do know of a couple people on this site who had surgeries at the two hospitals you mentioned so hopefully they will chime in. It seems like you are doing good research and getting more than one opinion so that's great. God bless you on your journey and please keep us posted.

Grace Mason Welcome Jessica. It can be overwhelming thinking about an upcoming surgery. As others have mentioned, it is done routinely and well now with great results. Kudos to you on getting more than one opinion. I believe that is important. I had a Ross at Mt Sinai in NYC and I would choose them again. They have a fantastic team. Definitely go with a surgeon that does a high volume of the type of surgery you choose. Thinking of you and wishing you well.

Anna Ma I can really relate to you, Jessica! The first thing came to my mind when I heard I need the surgery was my 11 year old. It was overwhelming at first. And for your age, it is hard to make decisions. I agree that research on Ross, and find out if you have other issues is first step. I had both aneurysm and bicuspid valves. So I like Valeri replaced a bunch of “parts”. I chose tissue valves and I am 52.

Anna Ma Also, I remember the Boston hospital you mentioned is ranked top 25 if my memory serves me correctly which is good. But if you can consider NYC, mt Sinai and NYPH are all good. I had my surgery done at Columbia NYPH.
