Update: Out of the local hospital and back home for a few days. A-fib, shortness of breath (on O2), fluid retention, brain fog, extreme weakness, and butt sores are issues. Diaretics were doubled for a few days by my PCP but fluid retention in ankles, lungs, and perhaps upper belly seems resistant to expulsion. Difficult getting an appt with a local cardiologist. Have seen my PCP. Home health RN visiting. PT to visit as well. Focus is a challenge.

Laurel Howard-Boardman I had planned on long distance and in person care from the Cleveland Clinic. However, since hospitalization was needed almost immediately after I got home I have decided to do my follow care locally. The CC surgical team was notified of the foregoing but I have heard nothing from them addressing the post CC release issues, only confirmations of future appts with a cardiologist and test results. Most recently, I received a My Chart message from the nurse line that I can get follow care where I choose.

Laurel Howard-Boardman Thank you Susan. I learned this afternoon that the anticipated minimally invasive surgery will now be open heart surgery with split sternum. Totally unexpected. I have some small calcifications on my aorta and the use of a heart-lung machine reverses the blood flow direction, increasing the chance of a stroke. Late notice but it seems too late for mitral clip consideration within the random clinical trial. I report at 5 am tomorrow.

Update: I made contact with Dr. Gillinov's office today about my case and spoke with Christine. Dr. Gillinov will review my records and films and will then make a treatment recommendation. My very recent heart test results are at my state of the art PCP's clinic. The local clinic uses Epic and can "push" films electronically, as Christine recommended. My PCP's RN said she will get matters moving today. Hoping for no delays or glitches. The calls were productive and much easier to navigate than I thought they would be.

George Gardopee Like Neal, I had mitral valve repair (and tricuspid repair) at the Cleveland Clinic last November. In my case the surgery was performed by Dr. Gillinov. The outcome of my surgery was excellent and the care was outstanding (I detailed the experience in my journal). I had no pain, relatively little discomfort, and a very quick recovery. I had to have a sternotomy due to calcifications in my aorta that precluded robotic surgery. I can recommend Dr. Gillinov and the CC without hesitation. Feel free to ask anything - there are a number of people in our community here who can answer your questions.

Janelle Hurst I absolutely loved Dr. Gerdisch and the care I received at Franciscan Health was awesome. We stayed at a hotel a mile down the road that had full kitchenettes, was reasonably priced, clean, and felt like a little mini apartment. My consult with Dr. Gillinov's office was quicker but his recommendations for surgery were delivered through his nurse practitioner and he wanted to do a sternotomy - I know that he is a very skilled surgeon, but for me I needed to actually meet the surgeon before knowing that he was "the one". Dr. Gerdisch was able to do minimally invasive surgery and I was able to have a video consult with him (it took a couple months to get appt), but his office staff is awesome. Both of those surgeons are very skilled, so you'd be in great hands with either! A little background on my timeline, I found out Sept 20 last year that I needed surgery, started doing lots of research, had video consult with Dr. Gerdisch Dec. 2, and then had surgery Feb. 11.

I have been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse with severe leakage. I have almost all of the symptoms. Hard to conceive of myself as elderly but that's the case. I live in the Appleon WI area and am seeking a good cardiologist/team.
The best clinic in this area is considered Heart and Vascular Institute. My Fed policy, Health Partners, that acts like a Medicare supplement, doesn't work with that medical organization. Others in the immediate area are not recommended. I can travel. I've done some research to find reviews with no real success and am at a loss. We are 40 miles from Green Bay and 100 miles from Milwaukee. We get some of our medical treatment at Froedtert in Milwaukee.
Any suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks! Lori

Susan Lynn Laurel - Welcome to the site. You may want to call the insurance carrier to see the cardio thoracic surgeons who are participating in your plan. As Lynn suggested, once you know what surgeons your insurance program covers, then you can compare it to the list of surgeons from Wisconsin (or other states) that patients have mentioned on this website.
To get this list, type: "Wisconsin surgeons" in the "Search for" area on the top of the HeartValveSurgery web page. (I tried to cut and paste the link, but to no avail.) Hang in there!
