Been a while since I was on here. Turns out not significant deterioration in leaky valve but still had worsening symptoms esp breathlessness, coughing and worsening swelling in legs and feet. Moved to private cardiologist who did many tests very quickly and found extra fluid in my heart and lungs. Now on aspirin, diuretic, betablockers, ace inhibitor and nitrolingual spray if needed. Also was anaemic too. My heart drug concoction seems to be working but unfortunately my body reacted to iron injection causing significant swelling in lymph nodes. Hoping it goes down soon but sent me to hospital last week. Some days harder to remain upbeat and a few wee teary moments especially when new unrelated things happen (query gallbladder issues too? :( am slim, normally fit and very healthy, but feels like my body is not recognising the v low blood pressure, cholesterol
and weight and thinks it's the opposite! Not helped at all today by pharmacist treating me as if I had weeks to live rather than being treated for minor heart failure with a good predicted outcome. Likely cause probably a virus attacking heart. How do others get through these hard or confronting times? I try to stay strong for my sons but do have some moments (usually in private). Positive getting people to do jobs round the house is good! My dr is hopeful it won't be long term but can you reverse minor heart failure?

Martha Dean I don't fully understand the ins and out of heart failure but I was diagnosed with it after my heart attack two years ago. They gave me the diagnosis because my EF number fell to 40% due the damage the heart attack caused. Two years later with exercise (and some diet) I'm back up to 60% (normal range) and no longer considered heart failure. So at least I can say it's "possible" to reverse it in at least some cases if not all. Stay positive and just keep taking one day at a time. Sending you well wishes and comfort through your journey.

Rita Savelis I'm sorry that you have to go through all this Louise. It's hard to stay upbeat when hard things happen. Sometimes one just has to cry about all the injustice, let it all out.... and hopefully one can move forward another day.
I do hope you continue to have help from your family around the house. I'm sure they want to help. I was very surprised by the help my son gave me (not his usual style). It was amazing to see him respond to my requests....
Take care.

Barbara Wood Oh, this sounds so hard Louise! When my mitral valve was found to be faulty I had a heart failure diagnosis- I had been in afib without knowing, & my heart had enlarged, but just temporarily- so I am not considered to have heart failure now. So I would say yes, it can be reversed. Sending all positive thoughts & prayers your way- hang in there! xo

Louise Bevan Thank you all β€οΈ It's nice to know that yes there is a chance to reverse it and get through this. Yes, some days it is a bit boohoo and poor me! However it's all perspective and today the sun shone π Drugs do seem to be helping and I went out for a wee stroll in the sun which is so much better! I'm sitting by my fire now as it's wintery here in NZ! Take care all and have a good day :) PS my eldest son has varied between very unhelpful (worried) and very helpful which is good!

Jeanette Davidson So sorry you have to be going through this. I understand the ups and downs I'm in a holding pattern with my leaky valve. Just because you're going through this right now doesn't mean that this is how it's going to be forever. Try to do something good for yourself every single day even if it's something minimal. Feast your eyes and some beautiful things, Spend time with people that make you feel good, get yourself dressed if you can and I write a gratitude journal which really helps. Contact me if you need any support !π

Have good and not so good days. Some days feel quite "normalish" and others huge fatigue and exhaustion and at least twice my age! Have had a quite a few tests now and echo next week and back to my cardiologist. This time I see my actual cardio which will be good. I think my drugs for now are almost ok, but would be great if could get them right enough to hold things for now and enable me to exercise (walk) more distance without exhaustion later. Hugs, great friends and support from lovely people on here help with positivity and strength. Kia Kaha (stay strong) everyone :)

Jane Welp Thinking of you, Louise. I learned on Monday from my blood test that I have anemia. I had no idea & was shocked. I thought it explained my exhaustion. Prior to surgery I needed iron & folic acid which I took & am continuing to take. The nurse advocate said due to blood loss, it could take 1 month to get my hemoglobin back where it should be after surgery & this was not uncommon. I have so much to learn but did feel shocked.

Louise I hope your meds are getting dialed in so you can get some relief to help ease your mind. I find the waiting for appointments and procedures and prescriptions and phone calls....etc to be just a mind numbing mental grind...haha. It really is FAR worse than any of my procedures have ever been. Keep Your Head Held High and God Bless You My Friend !

Off to cardiologist again today finally and hoping for some answers or at least a way forward. Over last few days have definitely developed increasing fluid retention overnight which scares me a bit. Have also started getting sort of itchy skin. Also have intermittent breathlessness randomly but longer if doing any exercise/physical body moving activity. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms?
It will be good to know what's happening, not least because yesterday was a hard day where I had to do some chores and ended up making my 11 yo son stand in line to be served while I sat like an old woman waiting (preferable to alternative of passing out then needing an ambulance!) Will be demanding answers for sure today. Hope I can manage it all on my own. Next time will take my good nurse friend.
All the best to anyone having surgery this week.

Kathy Blank Louise- I hope you get some answers to your symptoms. Have they told you what exactly is wrong with your mitral valve to cause the severe regurgitation? I had gotten lots of varying recommendations but once I clearly saw the cause of my regurgitation it made selecting the doctor- procedure much easier. Over the last few years it is much more common to opt for surgery sooner rather than later for severe mitral regurgitation. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions! I hope you get some answers! Please know you have a whole heart family here to support you from all atound the world!
