I started rehab Wednesday and Thursday the pericarditis was back. At Friday's rehab,I told the nurse and I did none of the arm movement machines. Last night (Saturday) the pain really flared up but the right shoulder was the worst pain. Took two extra strength Tylenol, put some arnica gel on and went to bed with my heat pad. I did get some sleep but woke up around 5 and now in horrible pain in my left shoulder. Don't want to take more Tylenol now because I will end up taking too many in 24 hours. Going to call the cardiologist's office and see if I can take 2 Colchcine/day for a couple of days. I would rather deal with the diarrhea than this pain. Glad my son got here last night so I don't feel so alone.

Feeling like I might sleep better tonight even! The nurses didn't give any feedback on how my heart was doing but that is a good sign,no telling me to stop and rest. Was kind of creepy though that the ambulance pulled in just after I had left the parking lot. Friday is my next time to go.

Susan Lyons Hi Vicki, sorry I did not see that post before. No, I had a Mitral Valve repair and Maze Procedure. If the surgeon wasn't going to be able to repair then he said he would use a mechanical valve because it would probably never need to be replaced in my lifetime ( I am 63) and a "natural" one, would be probably need replacing when I'd be in my 80's.

Morning all, First visit post-op to the cardiologist last Thursday. Said he could hear "rubbing" around the heart so said that means there is some inflammation. But heart sounds good. I told him that some evenings I do run a low grade fever from 99-100 so he had me go to the lab and have blood taken for a culture to see if there is any kind of infection. He said I could drive, drink coffee and "of course! "go to the concert I had tickets to Friday night. So enjoyed another Guster concert! Dinner and a concert with my son and cousin-first night out and perfect!
I have been having more hot flashes and night sweats lately, anyone else?
What about this heater-cooler warning? Shouldn't we be automatically told if it was or was not used on us? Hope the blood culture will settle my mind.

Thursday night my left shoulder started hurting -badly. Took 2 Tylenol and went to bed and woke up in even more pain. Friday doctors weren't working so got the on call doctor and he said to get to my local hospital for x-ray to check for fluids. My son is here with me and took me to the ER and they did all kinds of tests-heart looks good, blood looks good and there might be a little fluid around the heart. As had been suggested on Facebook-it was pericarditis. The doctor gave me a prescription for Colchicine. I usually get my prescrips at Hannaford so my son went in to get it and was told over $500 for brand and over $400 for generic. Told him to get 15 (one week's worth). I will see my cardiologist Thurs. Afterwards I downloaded an app and checked prices- Walgreen's sells it for $146! I know I'll be setting up an account there for refills. That pain was horrendous! Seems like the medicine has already calmed it down-so grateful.
Susan Lyons I am feeling wiped out today. Hope to get some energy back tomorrow.

Peggy Whitecotton I was not allowed caffeine after OHS. I had caffeine sugar free tea, decaf coffee and diet caffeine free Pepsi.. I was told that caffeine could make your heart race and could cause Afib. You have a 30% chance of going into Afib after surgery and my doctor did not want to overwork the heart.. Your Heart already is doing fiplops and traumatized from surgery, so they try to keep from overloading the heart. I had aortic valve replaced with bovine and never went into Afib. My sister had her Mitro repaired and went into Afib, ended up with a permanent pacemaker and had to be put on Coumadin for the rest of her life..

Peggy Whitecotton Sorry but coffee can affect the heart, research it. Caffeine is a stimulant and effects the nervous system. It can increase blood pressure and increase heart rate. Having worked many years on night shift my coworkers and I drank coffee and ate chocolate to keep awake and alert.

Peggy Whitecotton Oh Susan... Don't be discouraged, I had shortness of breath for about 3 months the first 6 weeks was very bad. My feet were so swollen they looked like stuffed sausages. Like you my 02 sats were good. Even talking would make me breathless, I couldn't do things like comb my hair let alone use a hair dryer. I had to depend on my children to help me, that was hard as I had always been proud and independent. OHS recovery is a very humbling experience let me tell you.. When I was about 4 weeks post-op I began to cry a lot and really felt like I had made a big mistake having this surgery. When I saw my surgeon the following week he was so sweet, spent a long time talking to me, listening to my fears. Everyone's recovery is different, in my case, my heart was very bad.. If I would have gotten to him sooner my recovery might have been easier. Most important Susan, I remember him saying that the heart has to do some remodeling, in other words your heart has to relearn how to work with a normal working valve and that could take 9 months to a year for the heart to fully heal and it will go through many changes (at least mine did) such as heart pounding or racing. Your surgery itself 2 or 3 months to heal but the heart takes longer. It's has been 14 months for me and I feel great and have so much energy. I saw my cardiologist today and he is so please of my progress, no heart Murmur. I will have my yearly echo next week but expecting a good report. So hang in there you will make it. Remember your new heart is a miracle and you have been given a second chance to live. God bless you!!
