Hi Dan, don't be terrified! You have to go through with this. It will extend your life and improve the quality of it. And, it's better to go into surgery with a healthy heart, before the symptoms appear, than after the symptoms appear. Recovery will be shorter and easier. Nowadays, mitral valve repair is routine surgery. Look at it this way, "You have to get it before it gets you!" Be strong! Keep us posted.

My ohs for mitral valve repair is November 19 and I'm feeling nervous and fearful of the whole thing.
Reading comments like yours is reassuring though.

Well Dan, It is a big deal. It also happens to be a big deal with good solutions. It has been just about a month since I found out that I needed a valve replaced and a couple of bypasses. I was not handling the news well at all, at first. My solution was educate myself on the issue and focus on the best solution for me. I started by reading Adam's book that is available on this site. Adam is the guy that started this after his valve job quite a few years ago. I also found this site and the Cleveland Clinic sites great sources of information. I have stayed away from most blogs and internet searches. I know what to expect and that along with some time and a quite a few deep breaths has helped me get past most of my fear. I still have my moments but am finally ready to feel good again.
