Hello Lila I hope your feeling well. I had a couple questions for you. What kind of Aortic Valve did you have done. If a Mech Valve how is your INR level maintenance going? I am having a Mechanical Valve put in to replace my leaky native Aortic Valve next week on Feb 22. Was just curious about your situation and experiences. Thanks Lila and God Bless You

Lila Richards I am feeling great, almost at the 20 week mark. I opted for the bovine tissue valve. There are studies that show a 20-25 year expected longevity of this valve. I'm 55 and travel extensively for my work so I didn't think I wanted to get a mechanical valve, Coumadin, and all the frequent blood testing (every two weeks) due to my harried lifestyle. If I need it replaced in the next few years, I'm hoping for AVR procedure which is less invasive, and no more open heart!
Now, the great thing about mechanical valve is it will never ever have to be replaced... just look into the detail of maintenance on the valve. I don't know your age, but if you are an active person, that Coumadin will be a pain To manage get advice from your surgeon or cardiologist. If you are way older, then a mechanical might be the best bet. I'd like to hear about your specific situation first. But I see your surgery is on 22nd? I will send up prayers and well wishes to you that day! I promise you'll better on the other side of this! π€

Hi Lila,
I am sure you think I have forgotten you. We have been at Isle of Palms much more than I thought we would be. We are back home in Greer now, but my husband and I have horrible colds. I still would like for us to get together soon. I think I had better give this cold a little longer to go away. I don't want to infect you! Let me hear from you when you get a chance. 864-979-4996 or dzeigler@zepco.net

Don't know if anyone is following Lila's guestbook but I (her sister) thought I'd post an update - she came through surgery with flying colors and is doing beautifully. She's still in the ICU right this minute but may get out and into a step-down room as early as this afternoon if all goes well. Praise the Lord and all the wonderful health care professionals at St. Francis Hospital! :)

Good Morning Lila. I just wanted to let you know how much I'm praying for you. You have this. I know the terror is real and no matter how many people tell you it is done every day. "it isn't done everyday to you". My imagination worked overtime and probably caused me undue stress. Try to relax (I know....impossible, but try) Cardiac ICU is a place where they will take exceptional care of you. I try to focus on the days after surgery and how, in time, I will feel better. You will get through this. Think positive, happy thoughts. It does work.
Ellen Leng Good surgery day to you, Lila, sending you peace and good karma.
