Hi Luke, choosing a valve was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made. There were reasons to go mechanical and there were reasons to go tissue. My age at the time (59) put me on the cusp of going either way. I have a brother who is a doctor so it helped to discuss with him and get his opinion. My husband and I weighed the thought of being on warfarin and my being somewhat of a clutz, I opted for the tissue valve and then TAVR if need be in the future. One of the surgeons at the hospital who made rounds one day said that I may not even need a replacement again because these valves last longer than they used to. I'm not a gambler but I guess you could say I rolled the dice and we'll see what happens. I have a strong faith so I try not to worry about things I can't control and try to trust God for everything. I do tell everyone that whatever decision they make for the valve, go for it and don't look back or second guess yourself. The choice is the right one for you. God bless you Luke. Sorry I m so wordy. 🤪
PS - had I gone mechanical, I would have gotten the Onyx valve.

Scott Courson I'm 49 and needing a replacement aortic valve due to aortic regurgitation. I am really struggling with the tissue/mechanical valve decision. My doctors are pushing me to mechanical. I am terrified of taking coumadin and what that means for life. Will I still be able to ride rollercoasters? (I doubt it). I work on a farm and already bruise easily I cannot imagine how many times I get hit in a day. LOL With machinery, etc. The sound of dripping water can keep me awake at night how will a mechanical valve do me with sleep? Can someone with a mechanical valve help to alleviate my worries.
Luke Rodriguez Scott, I have the On-x valve and ascending aortic prosthesis. I take Warfarin daily. After a little over a year I can tell you I have zero changes to my lifestyle. I guess the biggest change for me is having a tourniquet and products that stop bleeding in my car. An EMT friend said EVERYONE should carry items like that in their car, think of it like having jumper cables. Just in case.
I have not made any changes to my lifestyle, I hike, camp, work out....in fact I dropped a weight on my foot and it bruised but not any worse than if I were not on warfarin.
You will have to check your INR, a measure of platelets in your blood. At first I was going in to a clinic but then got my own INR meter and I do it myself from home. I take a snapshot of the measure and send to my cardiologist once every two weeks, easy. I take a pill every day but was doing that already with my statin so its not a big deal for me. ... Read more

Yes, in a quiet place you can hear a ticking sound of the valve but....I am hard of hearing and sleep with a fan. With my hearing aids out, I cannot hear it in a quiet room, throw in fans and I never hear it.....but when I do, it is a bit unsettling.
I think the bottom line is, I opted for mechanical because my surgeon was leaning heavily in that direction, and, I will wear out before the parts. I was 57 when I had the surgery.
I cannot say mechanical is better or worse, everyone is different but for me, it fits my lifestyle which is NOT by any means sedentary. If I am not in the gym, I am on a mountain hiking and if not there, I'm with my wife sipping wine. And yes, you can drink alcohol if you are on warfarin. It has no impact on INR. But certain foods do impact it. Best thing about warfarin is you don't have to change your diet to fit the drug, you change the dose to fit your diet.
Oh...some things to consider, the only over the counter med for pain you can have is tylenol. No aspirin or ibuprophen. While I have some aches and pains, tylenol usually handles that. If not, hydrocodone and many rx pain meds are fine. You have to be careful with antibiotics too. Some spike your INR and some have zero impact. Your doctor knows which to prescribe so first thing I tell to any new doctor is I am on blood thinners, what kind and what dose.
To summarize, a year out and I am very happy with my surgical outcome and drug regimen. Best of luck.

Hi Luke - I have prayed for a swift recovery after your aortic valve replacement surgery a week ago. Thanks for commenting on my post regarding my 5-year valviversary :) I had my surgery 5/23/2017 and went back to work part time in Aug 2017. I continued cardiac rehab during those first two months of work. I went back to work full time in Oct 2017. I remember being VERY tired that month but seemed to improve by the holidays of 2017. The thing that kept me going was having some good lady friends come by my house regularly to check-in on me and help me with housework. It took months for me to be able to do everything on my own. Definitely don't push too hard too quickly! However, I got moving as soon as I could. I didn't do heavy lifting but got outdoors and walked short distances frequently. I gradually increased the amount as I could. Staying active allowed me to recover very quickly. I am also otherwise healthy and don't drink alcohol or smoke, making me an ideal candidate for such a surgery. People were amazed at my progress, especially the ladies helping me after surgery.
Again, I pray for quick healing. Take care! Melissa

Luke I suspect they will want to do CT scan, TEE esophagus test where they put the camera down your throat as well as the angiogram to ensure your arteries are ok before they do open heart surgery. These procedures will ensure they do exact what is needed. I won't say this or the surgery is much fun. However the success rate of doing this before you have the attack is over 95 percent. I had one week of hell in the hospital and am on day 19 from surgery. It gets better everyday and you will get through this with flying colours. The do this procedure everyday with very successful outcomes. They get you up on the first day after surgery and I had already started my breathing exercises. This helped my recovery and 8 patients had surgery that day and I was the first of them to go home. Stay positive, spend time with family and plan some fun things after recovery so you have something to look forward to.

Luke - My husband and I will be praying for your upcoming surgery. I will share something with you that my AVR Surgeon shared with me that made all the background noise calm down; he said, "if people would listen to the recommendation of their doctor and get their heart problem taken care of, 98% of heart patients would live long, healthy lives." That did it for me. I went in on 2/4/22 with a positive attitude and much faith in my surgeon. The first couple of days were exhausting but I had little to hardly no pain. The hospital was very successful at keeping my pain down. I happened to be discharged home on day 4 and the only issue I had was my incision weeping. After we addressed that, recover was very manageable and honestly just tiring more than anything. Take your time and go easy, take you walks as you are prescribed and do not get impatient. Your body will let you know when to rest. I happen to work from home and was walking and working on my own within a week. I have just celebrated 90 day post op and am doing great. I feel great and have so much more energy. No looking back and have no regrets. Once you choose your valve, just keep looking forward to what you will be doing in a month from now. You will do great. God bless and keep us posted. - Heather Kelly

I had that done two years ago. I suffered from severe pulmonary edema much longer than I should have because of my cardiologist at the time. New one solved it with right amount of diuretics. Hopefully you will have no issues. And you must get this done. I was not a candidate for laparoscopic surgery so had open heart but I did ok. Even during Covid when I was completely alone during stay. You will do well. Unfortunately I now have severe mitral valve regurgitation and need additional surgery. Not sure what the plan is yet. But wanted you to know you will be ok. Just be of good courage. And God bless. Vicki
