Hello, my name is Crystal. All my life I was told I had a heart murmur. Well at 49 I started with STV. (Racing heart beat). After test, they told me I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, 7-10 yrs I would need a new valve. Well I continued to smoke and 4 1/2 yrs later. My valve was ready to be done. I picked a Cow valve over mechanical. Because no blood thinners, the rest of my life, I am going on six yrs with cow valve, they say 10-16 yrs will need replacement. But done through the groin, no more open heart. I am doing great with it. I am 60 yrs old, I did stop smoking before the surgery, they said if I didn’t. I would have trouble getting off vent. Your daughter will do great. She is younger. I did have it done in Boston. Brighams and woman’s Hospital. Great place. Only a 5 day stay in hospital. Good luck to your daughter.

Nick d Hey Selah your daughter is young so her odds are very good. My story is the same as Crystals and im on year 15 of my first cow valve (Edwards Life Sciences) and anticipating a new one in a couple of years if it can wait that long. Techonology has evolved so much in the last 10 years which is fantastic for everyone suffering from this malady
Selah Martha She’s doing great one year later! Thanks for your kindness.

Hi Selah , When I had my surgery , a fellow heart patient and now a dear friend . She opted for a tissue valve because she hoped to start a family, but knew it would be preferable to be a pregnant woman with a tissue valve . We both had emergency open heart surgery . She was emotionally very pulled between the two types of valve . She is hoping to start a family and if and when she needs surgery again she is going to have a mechanical heart valve . She had been very poorly and was relieved to have lived . She is doing really well now and got married a few months ago

Klara Čičić Dear Selah, I am sorry your daughter has to go through this. You are doing great job with researching and I am encouraging you to do so. Stay calm and take your time before making decision. Asking for a second or even third opinion is very helpful. Pregnancy with a mechanical valve isn't impossible and there are women who go through that. There is option of "bridging" warfarin with this drug called LMWH heparin which is considered overall safe in pregnancy but has risk of not enough coagulating of the blood when compared to warfarin, therefore there is higher risk of thrombosis of the valve. Each option has it's risks unfortunately. Maybe try to find an experienced narrow specialist who has dealt with these situations and can give you a "real life" response... I truly hope Ross procedure will be successful. We have your Ross warriors here on this site, male and female... Good luck

Susan Lynn Selah - Welcome! How wonderful you are to join on behalf of your daughter. We love to have parents, spouses, and caregivers here! Heart surgery is truly a team effort! Since your daughter is so young, I'm not surprised they're recommending a mechanical valve. We have a had a few young girls on this site making the same decision and inquiring about blood thinners and pregnancy.
Be sure to consider all of the options - some of the current bio valves have come a long way and replacement is only going to get better in the next decade or so.
Please ask any questions you have. There are tons of folks who have had the same procedure just waiting to respond.
