I got home today and had two bookcases in the back of my car. I had gotten students to load them and was standing in my driveway staring at them. I knew they weighed more than 5 pounds and since I had recently had a cath, that was all I was allowed to lift. I am not sure why I kept standing and staring because they weren't going to magically weigh less. Then a car turned into my drive and a lady got out and asked if I needed help. For those who know me, you know I have well..., let's say I suffer from the CAN DO IT MYSELF syndrome. Yet, I couldn't. I thanked her profusely and shared my dilemma. She graciously unloaded both bookcases for me. After she left I stood there and well, I cried. You see, God had done it again. He showed me this journey is something I can't do alone. I am going to have to let others help. I am sure my kind stranger has no idea what her help meant to me or how God used her. I have a feeling my role just changed from teacher to student. Lesson one, heart surgery is something I can't do alone. Good news is... I'm not alone!

Terrie Syvertsen Good Day to you Diane. Welcome to the site where I hope you will find the support and comfort that this experience brings to your life. I did! Still do, and on May 20th. when you are having your surgery I will be one of the many heart brothers and heart sisters(to whom you are one) who had their surgery and is out here checking in on how you are doing and adding to your support "group" of people. I will be 66 yrs. old in May and had my Aortic(Bicuspid) Valve replaced on Aug. 20th which will make your surgery date my 9th. Month Anniversary. Understand how you are not alone in this and as you have seen already, there are many people, very good people who are walking or have walked your path here to help out as you ready for this big event in your life. Feel free to ask any questions and know there are no stupid questions, nothing that those of us on this site won't do their very best to answer or head you into a direction for that answer.
I also think your story of the "book shelves" and the help you received was precious and you will find things like this happening more and more. I am also anI"I can do it myself" kind of person but be aware that as overwhelmed as you may get as you enter into this journey it will be necessary and to your advantage to learn now that this is a time to let people in. Get yourself used, to even though it is hard for us" do it yourselfers" letting other people become aware of how you feel, your questions, needs, concerns that only you have inside that head of yours as you go from overwhelmed, with thoughts going in every direction to being a person who has all the support, answers and confidence She will need to make this experience one of the "Big Things" you go through in your life that once on the other side of, you can move forward with your life and have many, many years ahead of you that will be much healthier for having had this surgery.
I am certain as you get to know people here in the community and ask your questions that you will be ready to go by your date and that you will feel sure that there is a life after this interruption to life now and grow stronger once healing and into your recovery.
