So nice to be on the other side! Turns out the repair was a success but the valve was in worse shape than they thought. Still in ICU as my own heart beat isn’t kicking in yet and still is reliant on the external pacemaker. Did any ot you have this issue?
Rose Madura Hi Dorothy. I hope you can get out of ICU soon. Thankfully, I did not have this issue.
Nancy Surprenant Takahashi I was also in ICU for extra days, 3 in total, my heart rate was too low. it finally kicked in. You sound pretty good, I was no where able to get on the internet for several days, i was out of it.

Susan Lynn Welcome to recovery! I didn't have the same issue, but everyone is different. You're in the right place to get the care you need. Be patient and when you feel up to it, walk. The best advice I got was walk, walk, walk. Glad your surgery is behind you!

Rita Savelis Yes. I spent several weeks (not in ICU, but in a regular hospital room) waiting (amongst other things) for my heart beat to kick in, but then I got a permanent pacemaker. This happens, but if they spent weeks waiting it's because usually one's heart will get back to rhythm. So I wish you the best.
Surgery (even when successful) is hard on the heart, so give it some time. Take care.

I couldn’t be as prepared as I am without all of your wise experience and wisdom. I feel prepared because of all of you who have posted your experiences and recovery. I can’t thank you enough!
Susan Lynn Good luck, Dorothy. We'll be here waiting for you, too! You're going to be just fine.
Marie Myers Hope that everything goes smooth as silk for you!

Bob Fessler Dr. Barnhart did my AVR surgery and I have nothing but good things to say about him. You will do great. Other than the recovery beds at Swedish, I had no complaints. They treated me wonderfully before and after surgery. I will keep you in my prayers today.

In anticipation of my upcoming surgery I am trying to get the house (and myself) completely ready. Someone had mentioned that a wedge for the bed helped in allowing you to sleep propped up as laying flat is painful. Most of the wedges I saw looked too skimpy. Finally found this one on Amazon. I wanted to make sure it works and is comfortable so it already arrived and I've tested it out. It is really wonderful! Providing the link should it be helpful to anyone. It's called the Avana Kind Bed Orthopedic Support Pillow Comfort System.

Civita Fahey The wedge helped me a lot. I'm not a back sleeper and I was getting no sleep. It allowed me slightly move to my side enough so I could get some rest. Its not easy the first two weeks to move to either side, but, it gets better.. 10 months later I cant even remember that much.. amazing how fast our minds put any discomfort away .
Sophia Ridley I had severe shoulder pain if I tried to sleep flat so the wedge was vital.

Newbie to this process and still trying to wrap my head around everything. Relatively still young - in my late 50’s so I was so surprised this is happening. Even though I’ve been working out with a trainer twice a week for the past year (and feeling great), a routine echo showed that my mitral valve prolapse now has severe regurgitation. Had a TEE, found a great surgeon, scheduled a CATH and planning on surgery mid-April. The range of emotions (petrified, depressed, angry, depressed again) has left me exhausted. Thank goodness my surgeon recommended this site to me. Extremely grateful to have this community with me while I go through this.

Susan Killian Yes I agree Bonnie getting past the denial is a big step. In between all my tests I was walking and walking and doing all kinds of things, trying to prove to I guess myself and my doctors they were wrong I was healthy! But the 3 echos I had, the trans thoracic, the TEE, and the stress echo proved otherwise. This site and talking to you all is a big help too.

Phyllis Petersen I knew for a lot of years that I may have to have my mitral valve repaired some day, but it still came as a shock when I was told the regurg was severe. Do you know what procedure you will have? Through the sternum or through the side? I had robotically-assisted, side entry mitral valve repair 10/13/16. Please feel free to ask any questions you'd like.
