Marie Myers I could not sleep in bed for about 4 weeks. I felt better sitting up. The cough took a while to go away also. Remember, during the surgery, your lungs are deflated, and it takes a while to get every spot re-inflated and to be rid of stagnant mucous.

Tracy Fallu Hi Jennifer:
Recovery is a complete roller coaster. One day you feel good and then the next day, not.
Give your body some grace as it works hard healing. Make sure to rest as much as you can. In the early days, At the advice of my surgeon, didn’t worry about night/day, just allowed myself to sleep when I could.
There were days I could breathe decently and then just walking to get a drink of water made me short of breath and couldn’t wait to get back to the couch.
Healing wishes headed your way.

Debbie Moriarty Hi Jennifer - when I read Tracy’s reply above, that could have been me!! Exact thing I was gonna write to you. The shortness of breath puzzled me too and I remember practically diving back into my chair at times!! I laugh now!
I also developed a cough but I was still in the hospital. It puzzled my doctor’s enough that they had me see a pulmonologist. There are different reasons for coughs and they like to get to the bottom of it. In my case, it seemed to go along with being short of breath. But nothing major and I’m cleared. My saturation is good even those I still have to stop and catch my breath sometimes.
I agree with Susan, it might be a good idea to call someone. I always reached out to my cardiologist first but oddly it was at my post op surgeon appointment that he sent me to the pulmonologist.

Susan Lynn I had my surgery in December and the floor conference room was loaded with fruit baskets, candy, and flowers - I suspect from patients and vendors. I did, however, write a detailed 3 page letter about the experiences I had with all of the medical professionals I met. I found out that it made it to the top of the hospital administration and that my gratitude was shared with the group. I also sent gifts to my surgeon and nurse case manager since they went above and beyond for me. It's hard to sufficiently say thank you, but I know they do appreciate it. ❤

Barbara Wood My hubby brought a basket of wrapped truffles that I offered to anyone who came in my room - went through about 80 in 4 days! - & I wrote down all my nurses & aides names, starred the special ones & wrote to the hospital CEO mentioning my excellent care. My husband also wrote to him about my icu nurse who he was highly impressed with. We got back thank you letters back saying they were shared & put in their files. I had the best care imaginable!

Debbie Moriarty I took pictures of my marker board so I could remember all the names! I am going to send a cookie bouquet and fruit basket to the heart floor - thanking these people specifically!
My hospital has a program where they have Butterfly notes that you can write for nurses, aides, or anyone special you’d like to recognize!! And we grabbed a few!! Seriously everyone who came in my room was amazing!!
I had one Starbucks card with me and I gave it the last day to the very young gal who cleaned my room and emptied my trash every day. She was such a sweetheart and always asked how I was doing. She was so pleased with her little thank you gift.

Debbie Moriarty Not to worry I don’t think, Jennifer. It took me two weeks to get rid of the fluid! I’m still on Lasix but down to once a day. I’m on another diuretic as well, spirolactone (sp?) but I think that’s more for fluid around my heart!

Then you will realize it is all over and it will be time to heal and enjoy your life again to the fullest. I am 7 months post-op and I feel great again and so will you. God Bless you and keep on ticking.

Susan Lynn I rode that same roller coaster, Jennifer. It's not a bad thing. By show time this Friday, you'll be thrilled all of that emotion will be in the rear view mirror. I don't know if it's mind over matter or your body's coping mechanism that kicks in, but you'll feel calm before you go into surgery. If not - ask for some good drugs! Focus on everything good that awaits you - your medical team will handle the rest. You go, Girl!

Debbie Moriarty Hi Jennifer! I also felt some jitters and butterflies early on. Stay busy and plan, plan, plan for your hospital stay and recovery. The morning of surgery, I was so fascinated and intrigued by what all the anesthesiologist was explaining that I didn’t think twice about the surgery!! I told him I decided I wanted to be awake and watch all the fascinating blood exchanging machines, breathing apparatuses, and millions of tubes at work!! It was fascinating!! Then it was time to go!! So I slept.....easy.
