I was diagnosed with rheumatic heart 1.5yrs ago which has resulted in MVR. I have only seen one cardiologist regarding my condition and he has advised me that surgery is not necessary until my condition worsens. I completely disagree with this advised since I have listened to doctors on this site where the advice is to get it done , the sooner the better.
I am in the process of researching for another cardiologist for a second opinion. I am 65 yrs old and I live in Toronto.

Rita Savelis I'm sorry that you are going through this. I waited 6 years until surgery (being followed with regular exams and ultrasounds). Others wait longer. I am happy for every day I had before surgery (my valves were stenosed from radiation). Finding the optimum time for surgery is an art not a science and there are many ways to proceed, so this is not black and white. You might want to see a surgeon who would be able to explain more to you about surgery. In any case, getting a second opinion could be a good idea. Take care.

Pamela Gregory Hi Lisa, most of us who already had heart surgery had a couple of opinions first. All the Dr.'s I saw follow the valve until it is severe, then fix it. I think the only way to see it is with Echo cardiograms or CT scans

Liza Pickles Hi Rose, yes, i have had an echo, treadmill test with dye initially and of course the 12 lead ECG. Another echo and treadmill test was done last January then my follow up is June 2025. My cardiologist is very good but I just want a second opinion of at what point this issue is taken care of. Healthwise, I am a very fit individual.

Liza Pickles Rita thanks for your response and Pamela, yes I was told to wait until severe but on the other hand, then what about the recovery period if one has the surgery at an advance age.
